“On the way up again!”
Reviewed 17 January 2014

I used to come here all the time years ago and it used to be great. Then it went down hill for a long time, and now its on the way back up! - The current owners have done quite a bit of work to the building and the outside area and it's all much better. The food is also really good and I like the fact that you can order something as simple as olives and bread to have with a beer or two. The staff are nice and friendly and when the pub gets busy there are always plenty of staff available to serve. We had a family meal here with about 20 of us not that long ago and we really enjoyed it. Our party included 1 diabetic, 1 coeliac, and 4 vegetarians, a Chef's nightmare n'cest pas? We all ordered different things at different times just to keep the staff on their toes, and they handled it really well. Great Pub!

“Country pub with extended dining area.”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

I last visited this pub about 25 years ago and not much has changed except for the extended dining area. There was a good choice of beer and the bar staff were pleasant. We had a game of darts in the bar area (all the darts were different, so difficult to throw / play. Maybe the landlord could buy a couple of new sets?). We had 15 people and the staff were very accomodating for the time of year. I had fish and chips which was not the best, but others had sausage and mash also various sandwich platters all of which looked very good. I would eat lunch here again, but order something other than the fish.

“Good country pub - NOT designer food”
Reviewed 24 December 2013

Just passed and outside the village of Butleigh, on the Barton St David Rd from Street, and on the LH side is the R&P. Don't go too fast as you will not have time to turn into the ample car park, the suface of which is a bit rough but slowly the holes are being filled.

Inside this traditional Somerset pub is the newly installed landlord, circa mid 2011, Simon who has made huge strides in re-establishing the 'olde' atmosphere, slate and stone flagged floors, now exposed, and a roaring log fire in bar area adjacent to the restaurant area.

Whilst the food is the same as the restaurant a cosier 'pubby' approach is maintanied in the eating area in the front room of the pub.

Straightforward pub grub, very pleasant bar staff and Simon's interest in old cars and cricket plus other stories of previous pub experience (if he chooses to relate) are most entertaining/interesting.

Good beer, good pub food and interesting bar company (if you want it). Overall a country pub with the life and atmosphere breathed back into it. The locals are once agin frequenting, a good sign. The Rose & Portcullis, not one to pass on bye.

“Good First Visit”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

Had a meal here last weekend with a couple of friends. We arrived about 7pm on Saturday to an empty(ish) barn of a pub, with little atmosphere (but a nice seat by the fire!). Within 45 minutes, the place had filled up quite a bit, bringing a substantial positive change to the atmosphere. The selection of beers and wines was interesting and the food pretty good, with ample choice for the vegetarian in the group (although the buche de Noel dessert was a bit disappointing - it would be much improved by the inclusion of a bit of kirsch to moisten the sponge...).

“Rose & Port”
Reviewed 16 November 2013

Been a couple of times over the last month or so. On both occasions the food was good, the service was efficient and friendly. Perhaps more importantly for the blokes concerned the beer was excellent! We certainly intend to go again and would recommend it as place to eat and drink.
