“Forest, birds and karaoke!”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Rooms large and air-conditioned, food very good, small but wonderful pool and birds galore - this is a serious bird watcher's paradise. Although I am not a serious or any other kind of bird watcher, I loved the wildlife and the surroundings here. Our neighbors had the largest telescopes I've seen on our journey and carried them early in the morning to catch sight of some exotic creatures. It was fun to see them (the neighbors) and talk about how excited they were to see rare species. Other exotic creatures here were the karaoke singers in the bar next to the chapel, which was a couple hundred yards over the river over a little bridge. That was across from the open air restaurant where we had the best freshly fried fish we had on the trip, along with a wonderful buffet. After singing, dancing, eating and drinking, we swam at night looking at a full moon - who could ask for anything more?

Room Tip: If you want to be close to the pool, ask for rooms in the low 100s (our was 111 I think).

I stayed at this place for two nights with OA T and could not be happier. We stayed at six different places in Costs Rica and I thought this place was among the best. If you are looking for a four star hotel than probably you are on the wrong vacation. Costa Rica is about nature and friendly people. You will find both here and all over the country. Our room was clean and comfortable. Yes, you might see a few ants or bugs, but you are in Rainforest. The iguanas, cutter ants, beautiful bird, frogs, lizard, bugs are all part of the location. We loved this place and the village across the bridge. We loved the beautiful chapel and had a great time in the cantina meeting new friends, dancing and singing karaoke! Pura Vida!!

The Hotel Villa Lapas is located off the main highway about a mile inland across the highway from the town of Tarcoles. The place is off the beaten track situated among the forest with a river that runs right through the property. The hotel resembles the old type of colonial Spanish architecture with luscious landscaped grounds over many acres of property. The rooms are located in many separate buildings with some of them situated on the other side of the river which you get to by crossing over a bridge. Wildlife are abundant in this tropical paradise as I witnessed monkeys, iguanas and especially birds of every color imaginable, including Scarlet Macaws. The exterior of some of the buildings appears to need some work, but the interiors of the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The food and service at their open air restaurant was very good and the meals were not that expensive. If you want to get away from it all I would highly recommend this place.

Stayed here a couple of weeks ago. Such a beautiful setting lovely grounds. The rooms are quite basic but they are clean and have big showers. Staff are friendly and food was buffet style but good quality.

We spent ages trying to find the place, there was a sign on the main road but no arrow pointing which direction. The receptionist was very helpful and the room clean and comfortable. Service at the bar and restaurant wasn't quite begrudging but not exactly friendly. We were glad to leave the next day as there was a loud party in full swing outside our room and we hadn't been warned about it. I wouldn't rush back here.

If you've not got a car and you arrive out of season, you've got problems! We were one of probably not more than three sets of guests on this large campus when we stayed in August, somewhat surprised to be so out of season. The adequate rooms are chalets a short walk away from the open-air restaurant which has a limited menu. Service was also, um, adequate but not enthusiastic. Beware of slippery surfaces, look out for iguanas and insects. Everything has the look and feel of having known better days which is a shame as the site on a good day must be spectacular. Across a walkway over the river is a semi-separate campus with a church, another bar and shop - 100% deserted when we were there.

I want to begin my review by explaining something about Costa Rica. We have lived here for fourteen years. We have read 100+ of reviews by tourists good and bad. I want to say that Villa Lapas is in the rain forest, in the jungle. When you have "expectations" you will run into trouble. We knew for one- there are always bugs. Ants are abundant, so what! If we expect that the rooms will be fesh smelling as the Sheraton in your home state forget it! It is humid and hot. Our room was very clean and large with good lighting. The air worked very well and the shower was hot. The grounds of the hotel were wonderful. There are a lot of workers always cleaning, raking, etc. Our breakfast was great. We had the Tico breakfast each morning. The setting is by a river-perfect! The Skywalk tour was one of our best we have been on in Costa Rica. The five suspension bridges are impressive. My wife and I made it in two hours. It isn't easy but it can be done! The only problem was a small leak in the roof with refuse sifting down onto our bed. The iguanas play on the roof and sediment "lightly" rains down. Another problem which is not the hotel's problem- our neighbor turned on their TV at anbout 1:30 AM and it was on the rest of the morning- loud!

Room Tip: Rooms 141- 150- in front of reception.
