“Peaceful Haven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2014

I have just spent three nights at the Villa Lapas as part of a tour of Costa Rica and I would happily have stayed for many more days. The rooms were beautiful, the food is good and the staff were all wonderfully kind and helpful. Above all it's a place of peace and tranquillity, where you can sit and walk anywhere in the gardens and listen to the sounds of nature (every room also has a bench right outside the door). Not far away, there are plenty of places to explore but I saw many different birds, including scarlet macaws as well as lizards, butterflies and insects, just while sitting in the gardens. Would totally recommend visiting this place for a complete wind down!

We arrived in the early afternoon from Monteverde after being dropped off by the bus. The grounds are beautiful as one would expect from being next to Carara. The reception, bar & restaurant are in a breezy open air area with views of the garden. The rooms are on the small side which was fine as we spent most of our time outdoors watching the birds. The buildings have a Spanish colonial style. You won’t have to go far to start birding. You will find the same species here as you do in Carara but they can be easier to see with the wide open spaces. We watched Scarlet Macaws flying to and from Carara & their roosting grounds. The swimming pool was small and full of leaves so we didn’t go swimming though we did dangle our feet in the water to cool off. We were amused by the iguanas running around, sometimes upright! We walked across the bridge to the Santa Lucia Village just in time for an afternoon shower. It’s a beautiful scenic walk past a small stream. On the opposite end of the property were some buildings that looked like staff quarters and an unused massage hut that would actually be better used as a bird hide.

Dinner & breakfast are served as buffets and there was a decent variety of dishes-meat pasta, some local dishes that I found a bit spicy, soup & salad. I forgot to bring my camera to dinner so no pics, sorry! It started raining as we walked back so had to borrow an umbrella.

Although some hotel booking sites will show a link to Villa Lapas, they never seem to have availability so it could be the property isn’t using them anymore so no airline miles or Ultimate Rewards points. They have an onsite secure booking form which gets the job done.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Although it’s a beautiful property, it does need renovations. If you are a dedicated birder, you won’t care because the birdlife is amazing but if you are used to Sheratons & Intercontinentals you will probably be disappointed.

The Villa Lapas lodge is quite nice: it has a nice garden, a very nice swimming pool, and friendly personnel. Also, the room and mattresses were okay. Additionally, quite some iguana's are walking around.

On the other hand, the lodge did not meet my expectations. The reason is that it is, and in my opinion, overly expensive. Additionally, it are mainly group tours visiting Villa Lapas. These were mostly elderly people, which made that we did not feel entirely home at this place. Additionally, these group tours had breakfast before us, and the hotel did not feel the urge to refill the emptified buffet, leaving us essentially with an incomplete breakfast. I personally think that if the nightly rate is quite high, the hotel should do its best to offer what we paid for.

As a final remark, we want to note that we had room 142, the closest one to the reception. As a consequence, around 5.30-6.00 we got waken up by noisy motorcycles of employees, noisy tour buses, and noisy workmen. So try to get a room slightly more remote from the reception.

First of all, I wish I had more than the one night I stayed. It was really lovely and Full of wildlife and tropical elegance. It is one of those all inclusive resorts, so I was not sure how the quality would hold up. I intend to return. Surprised at how much I liked it. There were a couple of smaller sized travel groups staying, but it did not tarnish the experience.
Early morning I watched someone testing the quality of the pool water, a comforting sign in my eyes. This may even be a perfect spot to take the family.

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Parque Nacional Carara. We couldn't have been more delighted. Our room, with a king-sized bed, was very clean and comfortable. The rooms have air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Toiletries are provided. The grounds of the facility are beautiful, with abundant wildlife. The hotel primarily caters to tour groups, but we were able to get a great room at a great price. Breakfast, which is included, consists of a large buffet with an omelet station. The hotel takes credit cards, but does not have an ATM. I definitely would return.

But it's difficult to put your finger on it. Guest accommodation is in linked rooms which all open onto a covered walkway facing the extensive grounds which front the Tarcolitos River. The accommodation is more than acceptable despite being described to us as being 'basic'. The hotel complex is located on both sides of the river which is crossed by a steel footbridge guarded at both ends by iguanas which appear to have made their homes in the girders.

The reception and several dining areas are all open sided giving a light and airy ambience to the place while at the same time providing some well needed shade.

Our meals were excellent - be they served from the buffet or barbecued. I have to admit however that I was somewhat surprised to be faced with those well known Costa Rican dishes of spaghetti bolognese and vegetarian lasagne (amongst several others) at our first evening buffet!

The grounds - especially those across the river - are attractive and well attended and have an abundance of foliage of all types. There is a small church and a well stocked souvenir shop in the grounds. Iguanas wander feely through the grounds and appear to be quite at ease with visitors.

The hotel boasts a small swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers and next to it is an open sided gym covered by a thatched roof containing just one piece of exercise equipment. While the pool was well used - if only to sit in to cool down - we did not see anyone using the gym during our three days there.

It's just a very nice place to chill out. Well, no, that's not the right word given the temperatures in Costa Rica but I expect you know what I mean.

Room Tip: If you wish to be near the hotel's main facilities choose a low numbered room. We were in room...

Rooms large and air-conditioned, food very good, small but wonderful pool and birds galore - this is a serious bird watcher's paradise. Although I am not a serious or any other kind of bird watcher, I loved the wildlife and the surroundings here. Our neighbors had the largest telescopes I've seen on our journey and carried them early in the morning to catch sight of some exotic creatures. It was fun to see them (the neighbors) and talk about how excited they were to see rare species. Other exotic creatures here were the karaoke singers in the bar next to the chapel, which was a couple hundred yards over the river over a little bridge. That was across from the open air restaurant where we had the best freshly fried fish we had on the trip, along with a wonderful buffet. After singing, dancing, eating and drinking, we swam at night looking at a full moon - who could ask for anything more?

Room Tip: If you want to be close to the pool, ask for rooms in the low 100s (our was 111 I think).
