“Not fancy but nice.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2013

We stayed at Somerset Inn based on a recommendation from my brother. It was our first visit to Door County so we were unsure where to stay. The hotel is a bit dated but kept clean. They have an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. They do not have any dinning like many or the others do so you have to leave the hotel to eat. All in all we had a good first visit to Door county and would stay there again but it would be fun to try a hotel in one of the other towns that have most of the shopping and dinning.

It was a dark and stormy night when we arrived. We had to ascend in the rain a long outside staircase, lit only at the top, with our luggage to our second floor room. The hallway reeked of chlorine; the indoor swimming pool was a few yards away. The suite's "kitchenette" —those quotation marks are exactly as shown on motel's website—was no more than a small microwave oven and a refrigerator, which was at its warmest setting. The "kitchenette" had no plates, glasses, knives, forks, spoons, or anything else for cooking and dining. When we expressed our disappointment to the owner, he said that he had told us when we called to make the reservation that the "kitchenette" was unsuitable for cooking. If that is so, then he should add those words to the website.

The bed was uncomfortable. If you like plastic plants, you'd like the decor. The ancient television was placed above the mantle of the fireplace. You'd have to a professional basketball player, standing upright, to watch tv; if you do sit on the sofa, you're sure to get a neck ache. The towels in the bathroom felt like sandpaper. Clearly the owner, who lives on the property, has spent little to keep up with the times. The suite was clean and the staff friendly and competent.

When we decided to leave earlier than our reservation called for, the owner was hostile. You'd expect him to keep us as guests by offering us a different accommodation, but he very firmly told us that he could charge us for the entire amount even if we left early. So much for basic courtesies and customer service.

There are many fine places to stay in Door County. Somerset Inn and Suites is not among them.

Room Tip: Choose a first floor room facing the back of the property.

Thank you for sharing your experience at Somerset Inn & Suites during your 2012 stay. Phil & Donna, the previous owners of Somerset Inn & Suites, retired at the end of the 2012 season. My husband, Matt, and I are the proud new owners of Somerset Inn & Suites in Ephraim, however; we definitely are not new to Door County or the hospitality and recreation business. Both Matt and I grew up in the Door County tourism business, over 35 years combined experience. We will maintain the warm woodsy charm of the hotel while making continual improvements. One thing that will never change though, the friendly hospitality and attention to detail guests have come to expect at this north Ephraim hotel gem. We hope you'll give Somerset Inn & Suites another try!-Angie Butterbrodt, Owner & Innkeeper

This was our first stay at Somerset inn & Suites. We chose a suite on the second floor. The layout of the suite is excellent for relax and the balcony was an added pleasure. It was extremely clean, but more than 2 bath towels should be available. Because the suite faced Route 42, it was noisy during the day, but very quiet at night. Phil the manager was extremely pleasant and his jokes were actually funny. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: If you like to sleep late in the morning, choose a room or suite on the backside of the building...

Having stayed in hotels across the country, can't recall staying in a cleaner hotel. The property is dated, but from the cleanest rooms imaginable to a great location in DC and very hospitable proprietors, we will most certainly return!

My wife and I have stayed at Somerset even before the current owners took over. Great location, clean rooms and grounds.
Phil and Donna are the perfect hosts.
Location is good to get to all the restaurants and shopping in Door County.

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe suites.

Stayed at the Somerset Inn & Suites for Labor Day weekend. Lucked out and got the last room because the other people didn't show up for it! The owner is so friendly and fun to talk to. The room was incredibly clean and the staff was very nice. We would love to come again! It was a perfect 1 week anniversary get-a-way! Thanks Phil!!! (That's the owner)

Well, we just got back from Somerset, we stayed in the kitchen suite second door from the pool. Everything is just the same and I mean everything. For the first time ever I felt things are getting a bit outdated. Seriously, looking back at old vacation pic's, it is the same carpet for over 12 years now, also there was a musty odor in the bedroom, which I am sure has something to do with that carpeting. The bedroom only has a double bed and it was rock hard. Furniture, wall decor and fake plants all need sprucing up. Phil and Donna still keep the place spotless and it is a nice peaceful place to stay. I think you'd be better off to get two hotel rooms with two beds as the sofa beds are unsleepable....Please, please update this place a bit.

Room Tip: there is pool side and parking lot side, also 2 floors
