“Nice Property - Awful Experience with Reservations”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

The resort location, and amenities are very nice. Unfortunately the service -specifically by Holiday Inn-- is the worst we have ever experienced with this caliber of hotel. I travel extensively for business and have many, many experiences to benchmark against. Upon making reservations (cannot be made direct with the hotel) through a 3rd party - I requested a late checkout (check-out time is 10 am which doesn't accommodate the relaxing weekend we were anticipating). The reservation agent was on the phone with me for some time and indicated he was in communication with the property. The information I received was that they would extend checkout until 2 pm - with no additional charge and a $40 charge would be incurred if we wished to stay until 4 pm. The agent suggested that I remind the staff at check-in of the special request. We arrived to the property after midnight and checked in with an employee of Grand Geneva Resort who could not verify the request, but suggested that I call "Dawn" (Holiday Inn agent) the next day around 9:30 am. I did in fact call Dawn and was met with an "anti-service" attitude. I explained the situation and was told that although she was aware of my request, it had been refused and that Expedia (3rd Party) was notified to contact me with the refusal. I asked Dawn what my options were -- 1/2 day rate? Book another night? She indicated that she could not help me with any reservations and that housekeeping would be at our door within the half hour to prepare the room for other guests that would be arriving. I contacted Expedia - they did not have any notes indicating a refusal and indicated that "Barb" from the Holiday Inn had approved the special request. I went back to Dawn - who indicated that they did not have an employee named Barb. I asked Dawn if we could stay in the same room if we were to book another nights stay -- and she shared that she could/would not guarantee that and that we may need to change rooms. Obviously I cannot pinpoint whether the error was with Expedia or with Holiday Inn -- but I can share that Dawn was the least helpful agent through the whole process and was not solution focused, but rather conveyed what could not be done--and made the whole ordeal at a top notch resort more stressful that necessary. With an additional $250 investment we were able to stay until 4 pm, in the same room. While we are likely to return to the Grand Geneva Resort, we will NOT be giving the Holiday Inn any repeat business.

The staff at the Grand Geneva resort are very helpful and friendly. I was impressed and pleased. We had the Standard 1 BR with a Fireplace on the second floor which I believe is the smallest of the rooms. The room had a sleeper sofa that we did not use. The room overlooks the golf course and a beautiful view of rolling hills. We visited in spring off season, but the weather was very nice for most of the time (Spring). The room was clean and well supplied. There is an in room washer and dryer, an apartment size stove and full size but smaller fridge and a dishwasher. The kitchen is only large enough for one cook and opens to the living area. From what I can tell the microwave range hood doesn't vent to the outside (so we made bacon in the microwave). We were comfortable with two of us- being just a 2 hour drive away we bring alot of stuff. It would be tight for four and feel smaller than two hotel rooms. There are not room darkening shades.
We really enjoyed the area. We walked on the Lake Geneva Shorepath (walking right along the lake basically in backyards of mansions), played at the fitness center (pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, table tennis, weights, treadmill, elliptical, climbing wall, basketball/volley ball court, tennis courts- all free except the tennis courts and the climbing wall). We ate in the lounge- very good sandwich and fries, excellent service, pianist playing popular tunes. We also walked on the trails at the resort and they were very nice and did not see any other people.
We attended the Lake Geneva School of cooking which is a good place to eat and learn a bit with a local chef. Meeting others and cooking was a blast- it was an event for the entire evening. We ate at a couple of places for lunch- great lunches overlooking lake Geneva at Scuttlebutt's and Pot Belly Sandwiches.
I will say, I had the misconception that Holiday inn At Lake Geneva Resort title had me thinking the resort was on Lake Geneva... it is not. It is outside of town on small lake. It is not far into town for anything and some of the other small towns have some great food also (Fontana and Williams Bay) and are about 10 miles away on Lake Geneva. There is a small lake (pond?) in front of Geneva Resort, but it doesn't seem that it is a swimming lake. It is on the golf course. It is pretty though and there is an outdoor pool on the deck overlooking the lake at Geneva resort. There is a lap pool at the fitness center and a regular pool in the main resort building.
I would recommend it for a getaway and it was good to be there before the crowds. We got this on a off season deal for 25K points. It was worth it.

Room Tip: The second floor was fine. The rooms are a bit noisy but as long as people are quiet after 10 - basi...

I had no idea that such a luxurious resort was just about an hour away from Madison. Every one there was just so polite and friendly. I look forward to staying there again sometime. Special thanks to Eric at the desk, Will as our concierge, Candace, Sara, and Wesley in the restaurants (The Chophouse and worth the visit all by themselves)

This was our second time at this resort and we had a wonderful time. Last time we stayed 4 days and this time 8 days. The staff was great and very accommodating to our wishes. The tea tasting and taste of Wisconsin were excellent. We were signed up for two other events but they were cancelled, one due to w water main brake and the other due to lack of minimum attendance. We were given complimentary drinks and coffee for our trouble. This is a very pleasant place for us to get away and relax plus it is only about 1.5 hours away. we highly recommend this place.

Stayed here over spring break last week. We are points owners at this resort and consider it to be the finest resort property in Wisconsin, if not the Midwest and beyond. The Holiday Inn Club Vacation condos sit adjacent to the Grand Geneva lodge (former Playboy Club), a four-star hotel, restaurant and recreational complex operated by the Marcus Corporation. So, guests have full use of the whole property via free trolley shuttle transportation.

We weren't concerned that many local Lake Geneva businesses are closed for the season, as we never left the resort. Between pool time, downhill skiing onsite and many dining choices, there was no need to venture out. We and the kids were also kept busy with the resort's extensive activities program. This time, we did not do the onsite indoor waterpark or horseback riding.

We cannot wait to go back to this upscale property for down-to-earth fun! Oh, the actual condos are great, too...clean, spacious and overlook the golf course.

I love this hotel. It's located on the same property as the grand geneva hotel. Which used to be the playboy club back in the day. As far as the hotel goes, it's an interesting concept. Nice two/three room suites, with small kitchen, patio, in room laundry and everything is provided. Such as dishes, soap, laundry detergent, towels, linen ect. The maid does not clean your room until you leave. You have full run of this hotel, the grand geneva and timber ridge. I definitely reccomend this place for people with children. There are plenty of activities for both adults and kids. Such as horse back riding, skiing, swimming, fine dining.

We went to as owners within the Holiday Inn Club Vacations network.

Cons: Nothing was included in the cost of the room. We asked for a 2 bedroom room and got two rooms with cleaning charges on both, not just one. The Jacuzzi did not work, the refrigerator leaked, the elevator at our building sounded like it was going to fall at any point, and the prices on the resort were VERY high. A number of shops in town are closed for the off-season or closed on Mon/Tue/Wed.

Pros: The rooms were clean, the building was quiet, close to town, and most of the staff were pleasant. The area was very pretty. Rock wall climbing was a lot of fun and the staff at the fitness center were very nice and helpful!

We will probably not be back. There was just nothing that was a WOW to make the travel worthwhile.

Room Tip: The Holiday Inn rooms look out over the golf course. Good choice!
