“Lovely & practical addition to Kilimanjaro lodging”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

I stayed here for one night, right before doing a 1 day hike up Mount Kilimanjaro. It's perfectly located for such an expedition as it's only a 40 minute drive to the gate. This is by far better than starting your journey from Arusha, as that would mean having to leave around 4.30 - 5.00 in the morning.. From House of Westkili you can leave as late as 6.30 and still be in time for the gate opening.

Besides the practicality, it's a please staying here! Abraham (owner and former guide) is a treat in his own! Full of great stories, humor and most importantly; great hospitality! The lodge is clean, comfortable and very large! By far the largest rooms I have encountered in Tanzania! ;)

Food is great and the staff very friendly. Highly recommended!

We stayed few days at House of Westkili. The location is very advantageous to acces the Kilimanjaro Shira plateau. We were very surprise by the quality of their spacious rooms. The Owner Mr. Abraham Mushi and his team are very friendly and for them hospitality is a real talent.
A very nice stay!
Abraham est un hôte impeccable avec qui il est facile d'apprendre sur ce coin de pays et les gens qui y résident.

Comfortable, nice and clean, this lodge is a great place to relax before and after a trek to the west entrance of Kilimanjaro (Shira Plateau). The owner, Mr Abraham and his staff are very friendly. Excellent cuisine. No hesitation in recommending this lodge.

House of West Kili provides a very good base for hikes to Kilimanjaro from the West through the best routes, Lemosho and Shira (Shira plateau is one of the nicest). The owner, having also lived in the US and having long-standing experience with guiding, can organize the hike and other activities efficiently.
Essentially, if you approach Kili from the West, House of West Wili is the only good value-for-money accomodation in the area, the others being faraway and more expensive, and more designed as lodges. Otherwise, Machame and Marangu are the usually opted bases for the hike, but the routes are not as scenic as Lemosho and Shira.

Regarding the hotel, it stands more as a luxury motel, quite close to the main road. During the day, in the warm season (December-March) it can be quite hot during the day, but cool in the evening. The rooms are very spacious with good mosquito nets and big beds. The shower is big and with good pressure and mixing of hot/cold water. Details are essential but I had a very comfortable stay overall. A nice garden surrounds the rooms.
The restaurant area is not as nice, but management put some little touches (candle-light, maasai dish-mat, etc...) that make it nice. And the food was fresh, simple but up to international standards. Wine selection needs to be improved.

Overall, House of West Kili is the only good value for money option in West Kilimanjaro as base for hikes through the West Routes, with very spacious comfortable rooms for a comfortable stay. Better than many backpackers hotels in Machame and Marangu, but not as fancy as some upper scale hotels in the same villages (but these will cost much more)... And the owner takes personal care of the guests attending efficiently all requests.
