Just spend 6 days with our 3 pre-teen granddaughters and had an exceptional time.

How can we say enough about the people who work here? Across the board welcoming, focused, caring, or as Antonio quips with a big smile 'whatever you say goes!' We laughed each and every time but it sums up the vibe 100% accurately.

1492 restaurant is very very good. Obviously it's not 2-3 star Michelin, or at that haute level, but otherwise was perfect. And we are fairly fussy when it comes to fooding. It worked for the grandparents and kids, both.

We had a two master bdrm villa with plunge pool. I never imagined a plunge pool being so much fun, for the kids especially. Frankly I think of PPs as gimmicky but was proven wrong here.We all found it to be a really enjoyable think outside out big living room, day and night.

Did the monkey quest tour, the bird spotting, the in village cultural tour, afternoon zip-lining adventure, and the art project for the grand kids. Each and every one was some mix of informative, fun, educational, ecological. The cultural tour is free others are paid FYI

Whereas all-things-done-right make a visit like this successful , it's the poeple that make it over the top. Kind, friendly, genuine............ in every way you feel like you're in a better world than the one we all read about daily, or worse experience.

The trek to the beach isn't for physically impaired, as it is down a hill [with steps of course] and/or back up, Ditto to the bar, dining area, or main infinity edge pool where you stare out at the Pacifica! No kids permitted at this pool FYI, so a sanctuary for adults. The pool by the beach is open to all.
Dont want the trek to and from the beach or food? Call for a ride and the response is always: "right away" and its accurate. The vans swiftly come get you, take you, take you back anywhere on the property. And as they say to a 'gracias', con mucho gusto and they mean it!

Nature is of course a big star here as in most of CR. Iguana, armadillo, macaws, parrot flocks, etc etc. An open air zoo in a very real sense. We have been on Safari in Africa, and while you wont see big game in CR, you can get similar sensations.

Any disappointment? Perhaps only the beach, not the very best of the best on the CR coast. It has some rockiness and areas where there are rock protursions: no swimming on that side clearly marked.
Day one I looked down to see and think I was standing in swirling chocolate pudding [I'm used to sugar sand beaches of the Carribean]. But I got over this quickly what with the warm ocean and fun body surfing.

Punta Islita is just a great place. We loved it!

PS Did I mention how fantastic the staff is? [Thanks Antonio, Tito and Jose!]

We decided to do the honeymoon package with Punta Islita and El Silencio in Mid-November and it was exactly what we were hoping for and more! The staff is incredibly nice, they truly go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. The views of both places are so beautiful and relaxing. The food is delicious and that's a good thing because its so remote that your restaurant options are scarce but a bit on the pricier side. The spa and activities made this trip unforgettable. We went to the spa on both locations and the music and ambiance makes you want to never leave. We also went horseback riding at el Silencio and zip lining at Punta Islita and they we so much fun, the guides were amazing and it seems to me that they really enjoy what they do. Can't wait to go back, I do recommend going at least once for the experience.

Great experience in March 2014. we had two families together with ages 3 - 12. Parents had a great time as did the kids and we all wants to go back. Night zip-lining, horseback riding, surfing, bird-watching and monkey quest were all great. The staff was fantastic, the villas we rented were very spacious and had beautiful views and their own plunge pool. Would definitely go back again.

Only downside was that the kids couldn't go into the pool at the lodge level and could only swim at the beach side pool, but the plunge pools at the rooms helped.

Dear Jennifer -Thank you so much for your excellent review. Private Villas are the perfect option for traveling families and I am delighted that you fully enjoyed their spacious common areas and private plunge pool. We have designated the infinity pool by the 1492 Restaurant as adult-only to be able to offer a laid-back, relaxing ambiance as an alternative to the lively beach-side Borrancho Beach Club.
We certainly look forward to your return!

For once all the reviewers got this place right. Superb place, very relaxing and the staff couldn't do enough to make you happy. The barman Johann has to be the best though, what a character. The restaurant was excellent and not too expensive considering how remote it was, decent wine selection as well.

My only suggestion to the hotel is get rid of the black lava rock on some of the patios and around the hammocks, it's painful on the feet and doesn't look good.

The road trip in is challenging but not impossible, I wish we had gone via Samara as that would have been less dirt road but one river fording. In some ways it's best to organize the cab through the hotel as it's less expensive than the rental car.

Room Tip: Avoid room 8 with the lava rock. Room 22 was fantastic.

I am going to keep this short because everyone who gives this hotel an EXCELLENT rating has already touched upon the many, many great things about this hotel. My family and 2 tween children stayed here for 4 nights in early April. Villa was amazing, clean and spacious. My kids loved the pool, coconut trees, and the view. We were up early every day to sit outside, drink great coffee, and watch the birds fly by with our view of the ocean and mountains. The beach club, pool, and pool bar were lovely with shade and comfortable accommodations. My daughter had a great surf lesson from Nelson.

The staff are superb! I am afraid to name names since I don't want to miss out on anyone. We also thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals. It was the hottest visit we ever experienced in Costa Rica but the outdoor restaurant was kept cool with tons of fans and our rooms were nicely A/C.

There are ALOT of steps so I would not recommend this hotel to anyone that has any problem doing alot of walking (and steps). But it was all worth it to us. We will be back!

Can't get it out of my mind! Having read all the wonderful reviews, I wondered how this little hotel could live up to its expectations...but it certainly did and more! It wasn't just the location, the scenery, the activities or the food...it was much more. But, in a nutshell, I have to say, it was their staff with their warmth, friendliness, and their helpfulness that really make this a great hotel. They weren't just bartenders, waiters, concierges, masseuses, guides, etc. They were like friends. All this combined with their mission of sustainability and their partnership with the wonderful people of the village of Islita really sets it apart. The highilights of our five days there were zip-lining, kayaking, hiking, a visit to the village guided by lovely Vanessa who showed us all the artistic corners and murals, chatting with Miguel down by the Borrancho Beach Bar (and their super lunches!!!), an afternoon spent with Edgar, tasting coffee and learning all about the different coffees and recipes, playing in the warm, gentle surf of the Pacific, a visit to the Macaw Preserve, a restful afternoon getting a Swedish massage at the spa, and, yes, vegging out on the beach under a shady palm tree with a good book. The breakfasts were something to look forward to each morning with the made to order omelettes and the various juices. I can't say enough about Marvin who was most helpful through our whole stay. He's a treasure and the very model of an expert in the hospitality business! Even the drivers who took us between Liberia and Islita, taking us in the supermarkets and helping us shop for wine as well as coffee to take home with us. My wife and I have traveled near and far, we lived in Europe for eight years and have been to many different countries. Costa Rica and, in particular, the Punta Islita, is in a class by itself! We hope to return and bring our whole family in the future. Thank you for making this a special vacation for us!

Room Tip: I would upgrade above the standard room which was a bit small.

Let me start this off by saying Hotel Punta Islita has to be the most top notch autograph collection hotel I have ever stayed at. In my travels I have stayed at several autograph collections along with many leading hotels of the world and this is the first hotel I have ever written a review on. Months later I am still dreaming of this place. The service is beyond any 5 star leading or luxury hotel out there. From the moment we arrived we were treated as if we were royalty.

Hotel Punta Islita has got to be one of the most romantic destinations for couples seeking a secluded non touristy tranquil peaceful escape with outstanding hikes and adventures just around every corner.

Plenty of wildlife will greet you as you stroll around the property. From sunset trips, to horse back rides, to massages at the spa, to hiking, fishing, and just all out exploring this place has it all.

I had read so many reviews before traveling to this destination and a few had me worried about driving there due to dirt roads and river crossings. We had a 4wd Toyota and made it with no problem. Not even a slight hiccup. When you get to the remote areas of this peninsula there are (Hotel Punta Islita)signs everywhere helping you navigate to the hotel, so please don't let the remoteness sway you, it is half of what makes this place so incredible.

The rooms are fairly large and well maintained. If you go I cant recommend enough on getting a room with a private pool overlooking the Pacific. We spent nearly a 1/4 of our day every day lounging in our private pool or relaxing in the hammock as the sunny skies and ocean breeze blessed our stay.

What truly sets this place apart though, is the incredible service and politeness of the entire staff, from the maid to the hotel manager, they all were first class.

The restaurant at the hotel to was very reasonably priced and the food was exceptional. That's a good thing cause there isn't much choice nearby for dining. There is a great local restaurant just outside of the hotel property and that's about it. (One restaurant was being remodeled so it was closed while we were there)

This is the ultimate destination to escape civilization and relax and unwind. It is also a truly romantic and enchanting place at all times of the day and night. I cant recommend it enough.

Room Tip: If you are seeking privacy make sure your room is not next the walkway down to the beach. When getti...
