Hippo Subs was suggested by someone who knew we have had terrible experiences trying to find a good sub/sandwich in this area. Compared to the other places we've tried around here, Hippo is better. I'd say they are one step above a Subway. Located across the street from the Bay Area Medical Center, they have several tables, but most of their business seems to be take-out. They have a selection of hot and cold subs to choose from.
The subs are a decent size, though they aren't loaded with meat. Don't expect anything beyond the bare basics, but the bread and ingredients are fresh. The man working the counter was very friendly, and seems to appreciate your business. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. You simply order by number. All their subs, along with a description and number, are listed on a board or on their website.
Unfortunately, the problem here is quality, not quantity. While they taste fresh, the meats are not a very high-grade product. The tuna salad is simply tuna and mayo. The cheese steak is not going to make you think you're on South Street, but it's not bad. The turkey is a very processed product I'd never try again. The rolls are very soft and squishy, but taste fresh. The veggies also seemed fresh. Again, it's just the bare essentials, nothing exceptional or exotic to be found here.
Their website, hipposubs.com has pictures of each sub, and they actually look exactly like what you get. Big plus for that. If you are just in the mood for a sub to fill you up, and don't want to make it yourself, Hippo Subs isn't a bad deal. Just don't expect anything you couldn't make better right at home.
