My husband and I stayed here one night while driving to Chicago. The room, common areas and gardens were very cute. We stayed in the doctor's study room which had an electric fireplace and unique decor. We had the place to ourselves and it was great. The town of Mazomanie had historical landmarks and a few bars, very small. Continental breakfast was good with yogurt, fruit, toast, coffee etc. If you are in the area this is a good place to stay.

Childhood memories of the House on the Rock and the Cave of the Mounds led us to the hilly southwest corner of Wisconsin (a two hour drive from Milwaukee for us). Walking Iron Bed and Breakfast was clean, warm (both innkeepers and temperature this chilly fall). It's the perfect place to stay if you plan to visit both attractions for the weekend. It is only 20-30 minutes from each and better yet, just two blocks from The Old Feed Mill Restaurant (where we had a dinner that rivals the best restaurants in Milwaukee).

If you don't like the free DVD's or VHS's in your room... take a walk up the narrow steps to the third floor reading room with skylight where you'll find many more that you can take to your room. We were leaving before breakfast was served at 9 a.m., however the owners made sure to have homemade warm berry muffins, fruit, and juice set out at a table for us by 8 a.m. Overall, just a great place and a great trip.

Room Tip: The doctor's study on the main floor is the only room on that floor in the front of the house...

My wife and I choose this place as our base for the Fall Art Tour despite it being 15 minutes from Spring Green, the center of action for the tour. Our room, the Doctor's Suite, had a separate 2 person hot tub area with a loveseat, as well as a full bathroom with a 2 person shower. Breakfasts were gourmet quality and very creative, with fresh fruit, orange juice and good coffee. We enjoyed talking with the owners.

Recognizing there are limited overnight accommodations in the area, Walking Iron would still be a standout. It is an authentically restored home with five rooms, each with bathrooms that are above and beyond. Great showers, wonderful soaking tubs, large bathrooms! The sleeping rooms are very nice with comfortable, clean beds. Karissa and Dave are accommodating to guest needs. We were able to just relax and feel at home. Breakfasts were excellent and there is fresh coffee (K-cups) 24/7.

The Good:

This place is into showers, whirlpools & saunas. If you like your pressure high and your water hot, this is the place for you. Our shower was built for two, and involved 4 shower heads - one normal, one handpiece, & two at waist level for full body immersion. The other rooms have different arrangements. All rooms have whirlpools.

The electricity is all modernized. The TV is not. Don't come here if you need TV. You won't need TV...

We stayed only one day. Our breakfast was pretty good - not amazing but certainly tasty and there was enough of it. I've uploaded a picture.

Clean & comfortable. Our bed was solid - no squeaks or rattles - and seems to have been made with some kind of memory foam. However, I like a firm bed, and this one was too soft for me. But the softness was not because the mattress was old or anything. In fact, I'm not sure that "soft" is the right word - it was firm but giving.

A lot of interesting memorabilia lying around, and a bunch of old books & pictures in the attic "library".

The Bad:

I see from other reviews that some people had a problem with the owners not hanging around all the time. A problem, I suppose, if you show up late at night & have never been here before. We stopped by in the afternoon to unload & get the lay of the land, & the owners were there to show us anything we needed. They are pleasant and accommodating people.

This is an old house. Things like doors are a little cranky. I think this comes with the territory.

While the electricity is modernized, one plug in our room didn't work, and others worked only if the light was on. So be sure that your electronic gizmos are actually charging.

Modern coffee machine but no decaf. I mentioned this to the owners & perhaps they'll take care of that omission. If you like your coffee for breakfast, but need to have decaf, you won't get it except for some instant - which, of course, is not really coffee.

Other: not much to do right in town. We ate supper at the Feedmill. It was adequate - my wife enjoyed her salmon & brussels sprouts, but my chicken pot pie was really more of a stew (shredded chicken) with a pastry crust overlay. However, our dessert, a chocolate turtle cake, was very very good, and large enough for the two of us. And since they were out of ice cream to go with it when they brought it to the table, they comp'd it for us without our saying anything.

There's a BBQ joint on Highway 14 that will be where we go next time.

The B&B is an easy 20 minute drive from the American Players Theatres, and Taliesan.

Room Tip: The web site is accurate. I'd say that for the small extra amount, get the more expensive rooms...

Thank you for the feedback on your stay. As you know, (from our discussion at breakfast) old houses always have "a list of things to fix". We appreciate you taking the time to write a review and assure you that at least a couple of things were completed on your list: decaf k-cups ordered and hinge on doorway tightened!

Wow! Beautiful historical Victorian, re-done to perfection. We aren’t usually bed & breakfast people, preferring privacy when we travel. We got both privacy and top-notch service. Karisa made sure we had everything we needed then left us on our own to explore the house and area. They were just a call away in the carriage house behind the B&B. The history of the house is well documented in a book provided in the room. The photos and history were displayed throughout the three floors. The basement was turned into a spa with sauna for anyone’s use as well as a convenience refrigerator. We were so amazed at the attention to detail to make our stay perfect. Our room was immaculate and the bed and pillows comfortable. The beautiful wrap-a-round porch and gardens were enchanting with comfortable seating in such a way that several couples could be sitting out but have privacy. Coffee and tea were available 24/7. Breakfast was delicious! Karisa and David did a great job on bringing this mansion to life and sharing their story with such interesting details of the remodeling and the people who lived in the house! We will definitely be back.

We've been staying at Walking Iron B&B for approximately 10 years every year on our wedding anniversary. The rooms are very, very comfortable with a whirlpool for 2 and separate shower. The breakfasts are awesome. Karissa and Dave do a wonderful job of keeping their guests happy. I would highly recommend staying there for its closeness to Spring Green (APT), the Spring Green artists, and Taleisin. It's a wonderful place to stay for a couple of nights or a whole week.
