My husband and I stayed at the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee over the July 4th weekend. We are not bikers. In fact, we're in our 60's and drive a Prius.
The staff was super friendly and attentive. They gave us all kinds of great ideas for sightseeing in Milwaukee. The restaurant was excellent. And the beds! They were the most comfortable that we've experienced in a hotel. All in all a wonderful experience!

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by the Valet - which I would definitly do - and he announced us to the staff that we had arrived. The rooms were great, fully stocked bars, very clean, comfortable beds. The hotel itself is very unique and has a wonderful outdoor patio bar along with one on the inside and a restaurant. We didn't eat there but the food looked pretty tasty. I would definitly stay here again!

The original plans were for a two night stay. We enjoyed the city and hotel so much that we stayed an extra night. The room was very clean and had everything that the traveler these days require. The bed was extremely comfortable. The staff was very helpful. We would recommend this hotel to anyone planning to travel to Milwaukee. If you are traveling by motorcycle, they have motorcycle parking and a self wash bike wash. This is the reason we picked this hotel. We were happy with our choice. It is a little pricey but well worth the cost. They also allow you to bring your dog with you. This is a great place

Stayed at the Iron Horse Hotel for 5 days as part of a wedding party. What stood out for me was that the hotel Staff made us feel welcome, comfortable and there to meet our needs. The Iron Horse is beautifully designed including the common areas, the outside facilities and the rooms. We loved eating and gathering in the Yard during the day and evening. The food was excellent and the servers accommodated our special requests at all the restaurants (Smyth, Library) along with the bar. Overall, the guest care/treatment was outstanding. Oh, it's within walking distance of shopping areas and the Summerfest--i.e. about a mile. Not much within a couple of blocks of the hotel.

It's true! I wanted to love the Iron Horse. I loved the website and the photos and the exciting potential of staying in a loft room in a renovated warehouse. The problem is ... the theory of the Iron Horse doesn't live up to its execution.

First...location. Sure, this hotel is closer to downtown Milwaukee than if you were staying in, say, Racine, but it is not within reasonable walking distance to any of the downtown attractions. You will either need to take a cab or have a car.

Which brings us to second...parking. Parking isn't mentioned on the website, so I assumed there would be plenty. Well, there's plenty if you are willing to park on the street. Otherwise, you'll pay $25/day for valet parking. I'm not opposed to valet parking, but I think it should be mentioned on the website. (Of course, you can park for free if you ride your motorcycle.)

Which brings us to third...gimmickry. The hotel is designed as a "biker's hotel." I'm not a biker and I felt reminded of that every time I had to interact with any of the "cooler-than-you-are" bros that man the valet parking.

On to...service. The hotel wants to present itself as something first class, but it hasn't quite achieved that level of service. The rooms are modern and cool and beautiful with nice touches (like an in-room Keurig), but why offer your guests a fancy Keurig and then give them styrofoam cups to drink from? Our room was not cleaned until 4:00pm -- just as we were returning from a busy day of sightseeing ... so we had to sit in the lobby for another hour while she finished. (Once we got inside the room, we began to realize that the maid had not restocked the bathroom or the coffee items.) The wait staff in Branded (the on-site bar where we dined one night) also seemed overwhelmed (broken glasses, lots of dropped things, no silverware available) -- this kind of bumbling service does not match a menu that boasts a $32 Kobe beef/crab burger. And none of the employees seemed genuinely nice ... the first person I approached when I checked in at the front desk stared blankly beyond me until finally the other front desk staffer said, "I'll take care of that for you, sir." First impressions...

One last thing ... the rooms are noisy (at least the loft rooms on the 6th floor are). We knew everything that was happening in the rooms on either side of ours (now they're watching TV, now they're ironing, now they're having a big, noisy party).

There is tremendous potential here, but the Iron Horse seems to be choosing atmosphere and attitude over genuine first-rate service.

I stayed in a King Lofted room on the 6th floor (top floor) facing south. The room was clean with nice appointments. not overly sapcious, but the lofted ceiling made it seem larger. The biggest problem was the train noise. The trains do go by slowly at night, but you can still hear them.

The location is good, but not great. You are about 8-9 blocks from the Old Third Ward.

Parking was interesting. They park your car about 15 paces from the front door, where there is also street parking. As others have mentioned, it is $25/day. I would advise you to save your money and walk the 1/2 block to the street parking.

We had an appetizer and drinks in the Yard (outdoor lounge) this is a fantastic place during the evenings. The furniture is extremely comfortable, and you can bring your dog down to join you. The prices of the martini's were a little steep ($13-$15). Beer was $4 for domestics. We ordered the overpriced and average spinach dip. DO NOT ORDER THIS. It was $17 and served with crutons essentially. Way overpriced.

Overall I would say this is great choice if you are traveling with your dog or if you plan to visit the Harley museum just over the bridge. If you do go with your dog plan to have drinks in the Yard around or just after sunset.

My husband and I have stayed in this hotel several times and usually stay here when we are in Milwaukee. It's a cool, edgy hotel with a very non-pretentious hip vibe. We have stayed in almost every kind of room, including a double with our 3-year son (they only have pack and plays, no cribs FYI), Corner Alcove King, and standard king room. I have learned that while charming, not all rooms are created equal. Avoid the second floor all together if you don't want to be awakened by the lobby/bar/restaurant noise - they are exposed to the open balcony overlooking the lobby - with the exception of the corner king alcove rooms, but they are also still a bit noisier. Also, you can book a corner king alcove and have a room that has a door you walk into with a private little hallway and then another door to your room - you share that hallway with the other room which can be used for adjoining OR you just get a regular room door that opens directly into your room. I didn't know there were two style rooms under the exact same category which was a bit of a let down since I like it to be very quiet when I sleep and enjoy that extra hallway and door to block out noise (and pay for it).
I debated listing this as a 3 star after our visit this past weekend. I walked into an extremely stale and funky smelling room (corner king alcove (no little extra hallway)). The concierge that brought up my Desires welcome gift (their frequent visitor club) agreed with my assessment of the smell stating it smelled like "old wet towels". They gave me a free drink at the bar while they sprayed some scented stuff in the room and then after I asked the front desk if my room was ready yet, since it had been about 30 minutes I had been waiting, they called housekeeping and said it was ready. I got back to my room and it smelled better - but just like air freshener, which the following day disappeared but the stink did not. I also noticed something that looked like makeup smeared across the "clean robe" hanging in our bathroom. Very disappointing considering I paid $650 for my two night stay and would expect more.
I decided to give the 4 star review given this being an isolated incident and I have had positive interactions with staff, including the bar and at Smyth.
Room service was nice but there wasn't a breakfast menu on our room so we just basically ordered based on what we remember having at Smyth's brunch during another stay and asking if they had xxx.
By the way, there needs to be more vegetarian options on both the bar and Smyth menus. I found two things to eat. Smyth is a bit overpriced for what you get, and I'm not oppose to paying for a great meal - but I want it to live up to the bill.
Parking is either street (not the most secure area) or you pay $25 for valet - a little overpriced.
If you have a dog, this is your place. They not only allow all sizes of them, the pamper them.
Location is not in the prime area but nearby, but you will need to drive everywhere or hire a taxi.
Another option while in Milwaukee is the newly remodeled Intercontinental with an impressive lobby, but moderate rooms - or the Hotel Metro, which has a moderate lobby and restaurant, but nice rooms. I still like the overall experience at the Iron Horse and most likely will be back - I'll just try to be a little more insistent on getting what I want and pay for.
