“Great Location & Value”
Reviewed 17 April 2012

I booked a room, last minute, with Residence Inn in downtown Milwaukee, after calling all around. My husband and I were very happy with the decision to stay there, as the room was a studio apartment, high ceilings (this building used to be the old Gimbals), with a huge curtained window that filtered a soft light into the space. The studio King was bright, airy, and very comfortable.

Just know, that when you drive up to the hotel off Plankinton, you think that this is a convention area, as it does not look like the entrance into a Marriott. I actually drove-off and then doubled back. Not well marked.

Do not dismay, as this hotel delivers: free internet, free breakfast, and only $17 for parking (nearby) per night - not much for downtown. It was also a great value when you consider the fact that you are right downtown, close to shopping, restaurants, and not far from the art museum. Cab ride to the Carnevor (highly recommendable) was only around $5.00.

Room Tip: We were on the street side, not bad noise-wise, but would have liked to be on the water-side. As th...

TeamPac,
I truly appreciate you taking the time to tell others about your stay at the Residence Inn Milwaukee Downtown. I am glad that you were pleased with your last minute choice in hotels. Our location is great for exploring Milwaukee by foot (or short cab ride). Since we were converted from the historic Gimbels Department Store, each of our suites has a slightly different feel, yet they all have the high ceilings that set us apart from the other choices in Milwaukee. Hopefully, we will see you again.

Just spent four nights at the Residence Inn Downtown Milwaukee. First of all, this is an excellent location if you are in Milwaukee on business, or for pleasure. This is an old Gimbals which was transformed into a Residence Inn so the rooms have very high ceilings with ceiling to floor windows. My room is on the side of the river with a great view. The rooms are spacious, and very comfortable. Some of the furniture could be replaced, but the bed was very comfortable. You get complimentary breakfast which I found to be great, and evening meals which made this place a big plus. Doris, the lady working in the dining room was outstanding, and went out of her way to ensure the guests were happy. She should be commended for her great service. All the staff I found to be friendly, and helpful. The hotel has an enclosed walkway which takes you to a shopping area, and access to other areas which was a big plus, and for the winter time, it would be a great way to get around. The underground parking area is warm, so you don't have to get out in the cold going to and from your car, but if you have a large car, or SUV, it has very tight parking spots. I've read some of the negative reviews but they are mostly unfounded. Sure, you have to pay for parking, but you do at any downtown hotel in most cities. In the winter, you would be very happy to pay for inside parking. If you prefer to eat away from the hotel, their are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, with a Subway across the street, and a Mo's Irish Pub. So if you are staying in downtown Milwaukee, I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the river side. The rooms start on the 5th floor, so they are all good.

The desk clerk failed to tell us we needed to have our room key in order to get out of the garage. She also advised us to go two blocks up and around in order to park... why? We could've gone out on two lefts and would've been there. More bad advice... we wanted a room overlooking the river. She said it was by an elevator and could be noisy. I said I wanted a quiet room... so she gave us a room overlooking the noisy street, right above the public bus stop that seemed to run every 20 minutes, and also above Mo's Irish Pub... the night before St. Pat's Day!!!??? They started partying at 6 in the morning!!! Hello... ????!!!!!!!!! It was the noisy hotel night and morning from hell!! Then it was the Hotel California trying to get out!

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT overlooking the street and KEEP your room key for the trip out of the garage.

Kathy N, I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the Residence Inn Milwaukee Downtown. It is valuable feedback like yours that helps us improve. St Patrick’s Day in Milwaukee can be a crazy time. I do apologize that the celebration at Mo’s interfered with you getting a good night sleep. As for getting to the parking garage, unfortunately a left turn onto Michigan Street from Plankinton Avenue is illegal. That is why it can appear that we are sending you out of the way, but we are looking out for the safety of all of our guests. I sincerely apologize that we did not live up to your expectations, but if your travels ever bring you back to Milwaukee we would like the opportunity to win you over. Feel free to contact me directly if there is anything else that I can do for you. Thank you.

My second stay here was in February 2012 for a one night business trip. The otel is very well located in downtown Milwaukee. Rooms are big and spacious with small kitchenette. Service and amenities are average-good.
Is a shame that the parking is not include in the fare. You have to pay US$17 per day.

Some of the best places to eat in town are 2-3 blocks east (passing the river).

Very big room with huge windows overlooking the river and downtown. Nice hotel but the free breakfast ends too early on the weekends and the parking is steep! Also, beware the "mall" attached to the hotel appears to have been hit by the recession (not very much there and seems run down on the inside).
