This is where I take out-of-towners for a real old school Milwaukee experience with a generous nod to its Germanic heritage. They just don't build places like this anymore. Everything from the murals to the gorgeous ornate bar is a tribute to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. And if you love beer, this is the place for you!
A few years ago Von Triers was sold and I worried that it would be turned into yet another yuppy or - worse yet - hipster, sold-out crappy bar. But no. The new owners cleaned every inch of the place. Every bottle and treasured stein. It's better than ever. I only wish they would consider serving appetizers again. They often have local musicians & groups play in the lovely patio which is a lovely oasis in the middle of the busy east side of town. Thank you, Von Triers, for not just maintaining but enhancing a beautiful piece of Milwaukee history. And, it's fun.
