Excellent food and wonderful service. Plus a great place to linger over a cup, or two or three, of coffee.

My wife and I came to Mineral Point via a ATV and the Cheese Trail. Parked the ATV where the trail enters the south edge of town and we took a nice walking climb around town (Mineral Point is somewhat hilly). We came across the Gray Dog Deli (on the downhill portion of the walk) and decided to give it a try. Interesting menu with varied ingredients. We were looking for a quick lunch (arrived around 11:30 am) and elected to go the soup & sandwich route. Turkey sandwich and 12 oz spicy sausage/vegetable soup that was very good. The 12oz soup was just the right amount to go with the sandwich for a reasonable price. The person that served us was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu offerings. I would say that they were understaffed though. We thought ordering one of the soups of the day/fairly simple sandwich (although excellent) wouldn't take a half hour when we ordered well before patrons started filling up the diner. There wasn't any refill of water and took quite a while to be able to receive the bill. We would have ordered some tempting deserts but didn't want to spend quite that much time waiting. I too overheard that at the beginning of the day, they were already out of their maid soda and certain sandwiches.

I would still recommend that you try this restaurant, even with a few shortcomings. The food was very tasteful, price was reasonable and they have a interesting selection to choose from.

Went to Grey Dog twice. First trip, waiter/owner/manager (who knows?) got our orders wrong. We did not try to correct it...he seemed busy and in a foul mood, as we could hear him balling out the cook in the kitchen from out in the dining area. I had the vegetarian chili, my friend had the Reuben. We shared a slice of cake. The food was average. Second trip. We went in at 7 p.m. for lattes, after dinner. Same guy met us at the door and said, "You guys hungry?" We smiled and said, no, that we were interested in lattes. He seemed upset by that, but said nothing to us. We ordered vanilla lattes and got plain (wrong orders, again). Sipped them from the sofa while we heard the same guy proceed to complain to a CUSTOMER seated at the counter that he "has a hard time not swearing at people who don't understand how stressful this job is." We don't make a point of eavesdropping...the guy was LOUD. The final straw? When he told the cook in the kitchen that he "gets pissed at people who come in for just a latte or a beer, because that's not going to keep us in business." This was clearly said about us, as we were the only customers there drinking lattes. At this point, we left our half-full cups and left, never to return. Offensive and rude beyond any dining experience I have ever had.

It's a homey little gathering place. We just sat and visited with others that were there. Great desserts and sandwiches. They have books and magazines that you can read while relaxing there.
