“Cute Shop”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2013

This is a very cute shop in the tiny town of Nelson, WI. They are well known for their ice cream, but they sell a wide selection of cheese and wines and also serve sandwiches. There's a cozy seating area to enjoy your food and/or a glass of wine. Our young daughter wanted ice cream so that was our reason for stopping. They had 8 types to choose from, none of which were overly exciting. What floored me the most is that they do NOT offer samples of ice cream -- not even to kids! You have to buy the whole cone to find out if they like it or not. Granted, one scoop costs only $1.50, but it's still wasteful if they don't like it. This is the only ice cream shop that I've ever been in (and I've been in quite a few!) that doesn't allow samples. My other suggestion would be to offer samples of cheese. There are so many to choose from and so many different varieties that it would be nice to sample some before buying a whole wedge or block. They also don't offer half sandwiches (except for the daily special with a cup of soup). My rating would have been higher if they offered ice cream samples -- at least to kids!

“Good food, busy, not a cheese factory”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2012

Good place to stop for a modestly priced sandwich or ice cream cone. Food is tasty and reasonably priced. There is a huge selection of cheese from Wisconsin and other places around the world. But despite the name, cheese no longer is served here.
They also have a substantial supply of various beers and wines, some of them produced in Wisconsin. Again, not produced here.
As others have noted, it is very busy on spring and fall weekends. If you are looking for a place to stop for a treat or lunch as you drive on 35, this place is interesting. But I would not make a special trip to get here.

“Great Atmosphere!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2012

Absolutely beautiful old building. Cozy atmosphere with the wood fireplace going. Perfect for a glass of wine and lunch. Food was good but a bit overpriced. ($7.50 for 1/2 salad and cup of soup, plus $2 for bottled water.) The atmosphere definitely makes it worth it, though....so charming!!

“Cheese and a whole lot more!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2012

This was our second visit to Nelson Creamery and we were again glad we stopped. Wanted just a lite lunch and had the 1/2 chicken salad sandwich with a cup of homemade soup...very good! It was a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't very busy, so they suggested we sit back in the wine bar where there was a nice wood fire burning and we could watch the birds. Very comfy and relaxing. Lots of different cheeses and sausage, crackers, chips, wine...some from Wisconsin...and beer too. Oh, and if you have room after your lunch, try their ice cream or they also have other sweet treats that sounded good. Would like to try their pizza on our next visit. All in all, it was a great little day trip on a dreary Sunday afternoon. Even saw two eagles on our way back over to Minnesota.

“Best Sandwiches Around”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012 via mobile

I visit here often. No longer making cheese, they do have an extensive range of the world's best cheeses, meats and other tasty foodstuffs. The slight downside is the price you pay for a bit of something different. That said, if it is a once in a while treat, its ok to push the boat out.
The best thing about this place is the sandwiches. A good range of hot and cold sandwiches are available as well as pizza and ice cream. The coffee is good too. Prices of the sandwiches etc are more reasonable than the deli and wine products.
Well worh a visit at any tike of the year. In winter you benefit from a wonderfully toasty wood burning fire.
