I was trying to be open-minded about staying here for a week, but I was already disappointed before we even set foot on the property. This vacation owners association does allow small dogs to come for a $50.00 fee. But when I called up ahead of time and asked if we could bring our medium-sized chocolate lab, Lucky, who weighs 40 pounds, we were told she weighed too much (30-pound limit) and that we would have to leave her at home. I tried to explain that Lucky would not be a problem to anyone and that she did not even bark. She is a very well-mannered and well-disciplined dog. Now that we have come and gone from our vacation, I still don't understand why Lucky could not have come. We only saw one other dog at this small resort the entire time we were there. Taking Lucky on walks each day would have at least given us something to do here. We feel our vacation could have been so much better had Lucky been allowed to come.
That aside, we spent very little time at the resort. No pool on site. No playground equipment for kids. No yard games. Nothing offered socially for those staying the week. Listed onsite amenities: laundry and movie rental. We did go to a local restaurant they recommended for a fish fry on Friday night. We had a nice view of the lake there and the food was good. On Saturday morning we got up early and headed to Madison for the Farmers Market at the State Capitol (45-minute drive). Throughout the week we also entertained ourselves by driving to the House on the Rock, toured Milwaukee and the Pabst Mansion there as well as visited the Basilica of Saint Josaphat, We enjoined a walk along the lakefront in Milwaukee and had Kopp's Frozen Custard. Milwaukee is about 30 miles away. On Sunday afternoon we did drive up to Holy Hill, which is only a 20-minute drive. It was an inspiring and beautiful place, featuring the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary.
This is not a place for kids if you are looking for a place to entertain children and grandchildren. We did take our grandson to a local city park, Fowler Park, and we also checked out Kilties Drive-In, where we had some custard.
Let's talk about the unit we stayed in. We had a two-bedroom unit near the office. We had a nice view of the pond outside our living room patio door. We did enjoy watching the geese coming up off the pond and gathering close by our unit. The unit was furnished nicely with two bedrooms on the second floor. The main bedroom had a queen bed with a small walk-out deck. The second bedroom had two twin beds. There were certainly adequate towels and toiletries and we appreciated the free laundry located outside our unit at the bottom of the stairs. On the second day we were there (Saturday) the knob in our shower fell off. There was no maintenance service over the weekend and so we were fortunate in that we had a second bathroom shower to utilize. We called the office on Monday morning and Rich was friendly and able to fix the shower before we headed to Milwaukee for the day. The unit was clean and I appreciated the added touch of providing covered baskets on the dressers in the bedrooms where you could unload your extra "stuff".
We did utilize the kitchen for cooking purposes. The full-size refrigerator was appreciated and we used both the oven and stove top. There is also a microwave and dishwasher in the kitchen as well as standard dishes and cookware. We liked having the extra utility closet where we could store our coolers and extras out of sight. If you want to grill, you do need to bring charcoal, lighting fluid and matches for the charcoal grills available on the premises.
I think I could recommend this vacation spot if they did something socially for the people who stay there. Having something as simple as a watermelon feed on Monday nights to welcome guests and get introduced to other guests would be relatively inexpensive. It'd be an opportunity to share ideas of places to go and things to see. This location is within an hour of both Madison and Milwaukee and there are other things to see and visit if you know about them!
The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a 2 bedroom unit near the office was a nice location. They have a laundry room and a small lake for fishing. There was shopping near by, K-Mart, Dollar Tree, and Pick-N-save and a few more places. The resort is a few miles off of I 94. We were there Mother.s Day week and had a verity of weather Cold in the 40's and rainy when we arrived and by time we left was in the 70's. We hope to come back again some year
Units and furnishings are older but sufficient. Adjoining hotel and spa amenities are no longer available because it is up for lease. Sister and husband had a two level unit (534) and bedrooms were hot. We had one level unit which was more comfortable. Baseboard heaters and plug-in A/C units. Plentiful towels and toiletries. Friendly staff with easy check-in. Very good restaurants located in beautiful old town of Oconomowoc. Came for a wedding in Milwaukee. Also checking out breweries and going to the Brewers/Pirates game.
So happy to find this great vacation rental. Friendly staff and clean comfortable condos with all the amenities of home. We will be booking our next stay soon!
