Fox River retreat is an older home with everything you could ask for. Kitchen equipped with anything you might require. Yard and surrounding acres were full of wild life. The location is just a short drive from the Dells and Lake Michigan. The Amish in the area were friendly and very gracious. If your looking for all the bells and whistles this is not the place for you. If your looking for a peaceful home base that is like your favorite Aunts home this is it.
The home was perfect for our party of 9, there was enough sleeping space and the kitchen was more then adequate. The property was beautiful, with the fire pit and river it was a nice place to unwind after a day at the Dell's.
A couple things that we'll think about before staying there again,
there was a strong and persistent musty smell throughout the home. We kept the windows open as much as possible but the mustiness remained. We also found that the location was closer to 40 miles from the Dell's rather then the 25 that was advertised. With the Country roads and overall freeway traffic it easily was a 45-60 minute drive to the Dell's.
The home fit our needs for our stay, the price was right and again the sleeping space was just what we were looking for. I would consider staying there again on our next Dell's visit if the musty smell isn't there. And while the distance to the Dell's was significant the peacefulness of the property made up for the drive to me, my kids would say the drive was to long.
On a scale of 1-5 with 1 being not acceptable and a 5 being will definitely stay there again I would give the property/location a 3.5. The place is a viable option when we think about going back to the Dells.
As a local to the area that has mov d away and comes home to visit- this is a prefect option.
The home is fully equipped with all that is needed to have a wonderful stay.
Owner is very responsive.
An earlier review had made mention of mattress needing replacement- matresses are very new now. The are a firm matresss and not a pillow top. The larger issue is that damage to the antique bed was not reported to the owners or left for the cleaners to report back and that would have caused the poor review for a wonderful stay.
As the weather was very wet, the ground in some areas was to wet for us to do some hiking.
This is a great sport for sportsman who would like to do some fishing. Wildlife is plentiful! We saw cranes, deer, raccoons, turkeys, blue birds and our little ones caught fire flies.
The basketball hoop and pool table in basement entertained on rainy nights.
As this property is set on an old working farm site the care to the property has preserved so sense of the past. The furniture has history and character in the bedrooms while the living room is a bit more modern.
The only concern that families may need to know before going that will help with planning is that as this is a old country well and pump water pressure can be low. Running a bath for multiple childern would be an issue if bathes were back to back and not spaced out. With 5 of us we learned that we needed to stagger showers.
When back to the area, we are hoping to stay again as this option offers much more privacy than other options in the immediate area.
Thank you Jim and Kim for a wonderful place. We enjoyed our stay!!!
