“Wonderful FLWright home”
Review of Wingspread

I called ahead and scheduled our tour. The docent greeted us and gave all of the
tour participants background information and lots of information and about the family and the home. Wingspread served as a family home for the Johnsons and is now a Foundation Conference Center. No tours are available if there is a conference in progress. They are very generous and allowed us to roam the public areas asking that we not sit on original furniture, etc. We were allowed to
take non-flash photos for personal use. Frank Lloyd Wright gave the family a
magnificent space with mulitistory ceilings and fireplaces, but also kept to the 2 childrens' wishes: a Juliet balcony in the daughters bedroom and a spiral staircase
thru the roof for the son's lookout. Be sure to see the inovative dining table which
originally could be retracted to the kitchen between courses. Also be sure to see the SCJohnson building in town- must schedule a separate tour for that.

We are FLW fans and really enjoyed seeing Wingspread. We arranged to see it in the morning and then visit the FLW designed SC Johnson building in the afternoon. We had a private tour around the house (no fee) and were left to wander around on our own, both inside and outside. Good example of his prairie style and the usual fun stories of his designs and their impracticality for construction!

We lived literally down the street from here for 12 years & I finally made sure I scheduled a tour before we moved away. So, plan ahead, but so worth the planning!! Gorgeous & they give you lots of freedom to roam & take pictures of this beautiful place

My first view of Wingspread was about twenty geeserambling in the front yard, around the old swimming pool and outdoor grill. I've seen many Wright structures now, and this house is an example of what he could do with essentially unlimited funds. It is stunning, totallly different from any of his others that I have seen, and the third wife's art collection adds, not detracts, from the majesty of this home. It is well maintained though, as with all his public homes, there is always more to be done. If this house had a voice, it would sing.
That you can combine a tour of this house with a view of the Johnson Wax Administrative Building --well -- it was worth my five hour trip to see.
Its quaint surroundings make it an easy choice to stay for lunch or dinner.
