West Bay Camping Resort

The manger is completely rude! We drove into this "resort" early in the season to check it out. We stopped to check out the playground for our young children, which was okay, nothing spectacular. We then stopped at the bathrooms and went in to see how clean they were, this often tells a lot about how a place is kept up and it was filthy dirty and disgusting. On our way out of the bathroom a women, whom we assumed was a staff member (later found out on the website she is the manager), drove up in an old van and asked if we were staying there, we replied "No, just checking it out" and she replied with a very snotty, "This isn't a public restroom, get out!" We then told her we didn't use the restroom and she sped off shaking her head. Wow! We would not return here even if we could fit our camper, which we can't because the campsites are very small and look as if they can accommodate 25 foot and smaller campers without slides. She was very rude so we will take our business elsewhere. I'd advise that you do the same!

We visited West Bay camping resort in July 2010. Never in all of our years of camping have we encountered such rude hosts and non family friendly atmosphere. We were accused many times of breaking the rules at the pool (which we did not.) The hosts expected the poolside bathroom floors to remain dry. Obviously, this is impossible since they ask you to shower prior to entering pool and these are the facilities kids must use to go to the bathroom while swimming. Both hosts were quite rude and accusatory of us and our children. Another guest was accused of moving a rotting piece of wood from the forest...which he did not do. Very strange. It is almost like they would prefer if no kids were present in the campground and it was more of a retirement community.

The campground itself is nice and offers nice options for fishing and boating. But, do not go if you have a family. You will definately not be welcome here. We WILL NOT RETURN. There are just too many FAMILY FRIENDLY campgrounds in the Northwoods area to spend the weekend on pins and needles for fear you might break one of the ten thousand rules this campground has.

Our family group rented two lakeside cabins (#1-2) for an August weekend. West Bay was one of the few options that had some expanded facilities and still had 2-night rentals available when we checked in April. Website (westbaycampingresort.com) and communication were good. All in all, we had a good time of the old-time northwoods cabin variety. We liked the location, layout, and reasonable amount of available amenities and thought the cabins were OK for the price ($120/nt).

The resort has spaces for RVs and tent camping apart from the cabin/cottage areas, and we never were impacted by the other area's noises, sights, or smells. Even the two other "uphill" cabins are set apart from the other camping areas. This facility has a pool and a main building that has rentals (boats / canoes / etc.) and sales of convenience and site-use items (firewood, laundry room, etc.) There is an old slide constituting the "playground" and a horseshoe pit. West Bay is a short drive from the main commercial area of Rhinelander, but isn't impacted by it.

West Bay has a nice (but smallish if more than appx. 10 people are in the water) sand beach on the western portion of Thompson Lake. A concrete-planked boat launch is also there, as well as two piers for both boat-tying and fishing / viewing / jumping into the water. The lake was nice for swimming, but there was a fair amount of jet-ski and waterskiiers buzzing past (but safely far away) from 1000-1930. We loved the dawns, dusks, and evenings for swims and lake views.

The cabins were a bit old (and rotting in spots on the exterior), but interiors were well-kept and supplied with kitchen items and paper towels. Appliances were reasonably new. Each cabin had a fire pit and a small charcoal grill (charcoal or lighting matls. not provided). If it's warm, there is one box fan, which we found inadequate for the whole 2-BR cabin; I'd recommend bringing a second one from home (even a table fan would suffice). Linens and bath + kitchen towels (which you could exchange daily) were provided, but not beach towels.

There are periodic events in which you can participate, such as a bingo night.
