My husband and I stayed a Sunday and Monday night in September at the resort. It was the perfect, relaxing get-away that we were hoping. It was extremely peaceful and quiet. The pool and hot tub area was great, as was the spa, the view from the balcony, the friendly and helpful staff and the workout room. They have many miles of well-manicured hiking trails around the property that were terrific (it's hilly...so be prepared for a workout!). We enjoyed a meal at the main restaurant, as well as their pub food as we watched a game at the pub/bar the second night.

We went to the House on the Rock, and walked through two parts one day, and the third part the next day, which worked well (thanks to a prior reviewer who gave this suggestion). We also found a gem of a cave (Cave of the Mounds) nearby.

There were some reviewers who complained about the age of the hotel. It was not build or remodeled very recently, but that did not make it bad. It is very well-maintained and was well designed. We liked the large suit layout of the rooms, and especially appreciated the heavy (surely expensive) wood doors separating the bedroom from the bathroom from the sitting room. I could get up early and get ready in the bathroom with the TV on in the other room, and no noise could be heard in the bedroom to disturb my husband.

My husband likes to golf, although he didn't play while we were at the resort, but he thought the course looked terrific, too.

While the service was received was good, we were disappointed in the high price and lack of modernization. We could not get cell reception, and our room looked like it was fresh from the 70's.

The restaurant was nice, but we were disappointed that we could not bring in our own wine (the restaurant did not have any high end wines available) and just pay a corking fee. If you want couples to celebrate here, then you need to have the flexibility or fare to allow folks to splurge.

Stayed here with my daughter for 4 nights right after Labor Day weekend. As far as other reviews indicating the facilities are dated, I would say the most obvious thing in our room was the television sets need to be switched out for thin, flat panels. They are still the big boxy style. I would also agree with poor reviews of the bedding. The bedspreads desperately need updated to something more modern. Ours had several places where the stitching was coming unstitched. The pillows, while plentiful, are of poor quality. That said, the rooms are all suites. The mattress was comfortable. Our room was very clean and well equipped. The lobby and pool area seemed very clean also. The pool area is great - two large indoor pools and a large hot tub. The clerks at the desk, while not rude, were not overly friendly or helpful. There is no bell service at this hotel. We did not eat at the restaurant or use the spa facilities. The best thing about this hotel is its location - just down the road from Taliesin, and right next to American Players Theatre. About 5 miles from House on the Rock attraction.

This would be a great place to stay if it were not so over priced. We paid over $200 per night. I would totally agree with kaptravel, "The furniture is mid 80s and the carpet was worn and stained. The bathroom layout is straight out of a motel in the 70s. It desperately needs an update." and add that the blankets and pillows were of poor quality. We didn't try any of their other facilities

It has two things going for it- The view is spectacular and it is very close to American Players Theater, which is the primary reason for staying there

We spent Labor Day weekend at the House on the Rock Resort. We went with friends to golf and relax. The golf was fabulous. The course was beautiful, and well maintained. The course was not overly crowded, so we were able to enjoy ourselves.
The hotel was very clean, but as previous reviewers have stated, the hotel needs to be updated! In addition, the pillows also felt old and lumpy. We stayed in a suite, and had a small outside patio that looked over the golf course.
The indoor pool area was also very nice, and after a day of golfing it was nice to unwind in the pool and hot tub. There is also a spa on the premises, but we did not take advantage.
The hotel restaurant was okay, but nothing special. It was overpriced, and they were out of many of the items on the menu.
Overall, our stay was very pleasant. This part of southwestern Wisconsin is truly beautiful!

I have stayed at much nicer hotels for less. I expected far more for almost $200/night at a golf resort & spa. The rooms were sparcely decorated. The furniture is mid 80s and the carpet was worn and stained. The bathroom layout is straight out of a motel in the 70s. It desperately needs an update. The restaurant is overpriced and Sunday brunch consisted of a very small selection. I cannot speak for the golfing , spa, or recreational amenities here. Overall, I was very disappointed.

House on the Rock Resort is the perfect place to stay if you want great golf right outside your door and a little Shakespeare just up the road. Location is everything for this somewhat dated facility that nevertheless has comfortable, updated rooms with two queen rooms in each suite. The setting is beautiful in Wisconsin's Driftless Area near artsy Spring Green, famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen and the wide, sandy-shored Wisconsin River. Our draw was the American Players Theater whose live outdoor productions with top-notch acting and directing create many a "summer night's dream." The light fare at the hotel's pro shop was very tasty, but customer service at the front desk left a slightly bitter taste.

Room Tip: Be sure to book well in advance if you are going to the theater, or book one of the hotel-theater pa...
