My husband and I were in Madison with our entire family(4 kids, one son in law and one grandson) for the wedding of my darling niece. We travelled from Israel for this reason. My husband and I did a short getaway from it all for 3 nights. The White Lace Inn was lovely and our room (room 6), although a bit small, was decorated very differently to what we are used to, and was very charming. It was perfectly clean, pleasant and comfortable. The bed was way too high and even hard to climb into! Other than that, the room was comfortable and so was the bed, once in it.
I loved that a cat roamed around and that a dog hung around the dining area-felt like at home. The Inn Keeper showed us to our rooms and when I once asked for wine glasses and a bottle opener he was very willing to provide. The food was drastically different to what we are used to. I honestly didnt like it not only because of my gluten free issues, but everything, even the juice, was so very sweet, we couldn't eat it. I realize cultures are different and this perhaps accounted for the sweetness, types of things served and pre sized amounts etc, but I think a slightly bigger variety would have made a huge difference. Coffee was not good, and was not piping hot. I missed espresso and Cappacinos. Fresh real juice would have been great. The other thing that bothered me a bit was that although the Inn Keeper was polite and accomodating, I think an effort could have been made to be more friendly and inquiring, especially to those who are from abroad. We bought a cellphone, an ATT, for this little trip and it didn't work in the entire Door County area, apparently ATT don't have reception there. We had no connection with our family except for one phone call the Inn Keeper allowed us to make, to Madison. I did not feel comfortable asking again as I felt the atmosphere a bit cool, but again, cultural differences may account for this. All in all, besides the issues I described, it was a charming place to stay. I would not mind staying there again, if I lived in the area, but I would certainly look and see what else was available.
