“Average food not average prices”
Reviewed 12 May 2014 via mobile

Visited with 2 children over the bank holiday weekend. The side bar was not busy it took forever to get a drink - the bar was attended by a young male bar tender working at a snails pace. Food was average pub food but far from average prices. We felt ripped off, The Victoria is obviously cashing in big time on the tourists. We won't be returning.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your review, I am sorry to read of your disappointments.
Please be assured that your findings have been followed up with the male bar staff on duty over the bank holiday weekend.
The ethos behind the food offering at the Victoria is to serve the freshest local and responsibly sourced produce prepared simply using traditional cooking methods, which we believe offer both consistency and value.

Always been a great place to pop into for a drink after walking the nearby beaches but the building was somewhat tired. Stayed over a few weeks ago as a birthday treat and very impressed with the whole package - polite staff, good food, lovely room, dog-friendly plus decent beer and as always a super location.

Now a serious good option against Hoste Arms

After having read some of the reviews I must admit we booked for dinner with some trepidation especially as we were dining with In-Laws we hadn't seen for a long time. Suffice it to say we had a great meal with friendly service AND without the usual exhortation to "enjoy" (ugh!!) or endless queries "is everything all right" all too prevalent in restaurants today.
As for value for money difficult to say as the ladies chopped and changed starters/main courses which distorted the picture somewhat. On balance I would say probably as the Victoria certainly caters for those with fairly capacious pockets.
Would we eat there again? Most certainly.

Room Tip: Had dinner only

Elegant and tasteful décor a warm and and friendly atmosphere. Service was attentive but unintrusive, were extremely professional and attentive Rooms are wonderful and bathroom the same. Meals were delicious and beautifully presented. Holly and the wonderful young lady who served in the restaurant are exceptional .We are returning very soon for a much longer stay an amazing find in North Norfolk. We had very high expectations of the Victoria and they were far exceeded

I am so pleased that you focus on the staff and the service they provide, we are blessed with a wonderful setting and beautiful surroundings all of which count for nothing if the experience is not equally as good. Thank you for highlighting the great work that the team do to insure that expectations are exceeded. We look forward to welcoming you back on your return.

We rolled up for lunch on Easter Monday. We had been for a walk along the beach so we weren't too pretty. And it was comfortably busy. We grabbed a seat and had no problem ordering a drink and a snack. Crisp damask knapkins arrived almost immediately, served with a smile and an enquiry after our welfare. The food in a reasonable time and was good (but not brilliant on this occasion): my wife had the venison 'sausage roll' which was hot with crisp and flaky pastry; I had the soup of the day, which was okay but wouldn't have been my favourite choice. The Victoria does ambience in spades. Lots of people, grabbing a seat where available, mixing it up on the big tables, having a good time. If you can bottle that you could make a fortune.

Thank you for a great review, we are always happy to welcome you although advice booking in advance to avoid disappointment as it can get exceptionally busy when the great British weather permits!

Holidaying in the area, had lunch here yesterday and today. In fact, just enjoying a drink here now! Food is quite expensive, but is what you'd expect to pay, given the surroundings and proximity to Holkham beach.

Staff are friendly, and importantly for me, welcome dogs. My dog has had a good run on the beach, and is happy snoozing on the sofa now, which seems to be okay with the staff here.

Have been here many times in the past, and will continue to come.

We are a dog owning family who applaud the Holkham estate for allowing us to take our dog on walks in the grounds and on the beach. However our recent visit to The Victoria for lunch made us rethink bringing 4 non dog lovers for lunch in a few weeks time.
We ate in the conservatory which in our mind has always been the restaurant and would go by restaurant hygiene rule of no dogs so we were surprised to find not one but five dogs in close proximity to us. I was told that it was a dog friendly hotel which is fine, but I do think there should be a dog free area for when you are eating available.
We will not be taking our friends for lunch.
Food wise, the starters were fine but the 2 burgers did not live up to how they looked as they were very dry and for that we had the price knocked off our bill.

During the refurbishment of the Victoria early last year a great deal of time and consideration went in to planning how best to maximise the Victoria’s links to the local area, environment and customer base. Research by English nature who managed the nature reserve prior to Holkham taking the reserve back in hand last year suggests that over 65% of visitors to the reserve visit with a 4 legged companion and since dogs have been welcomed throughout the Vic we have seen a positive increase in trading levels. Prior to making the decision to allow dogs in the dining areas at the Vic we also researched the legislation surrounding this and found the only legal obligation on the owner is to make sure there is no risk of contamination and that all food preparation areas are up to specified hygiene standards, which I can assure you is the case as we have recently received a 5 star food hygiene rating.
Whilst I am sorry to hear that you will not be returning with your non dog loving friends I hope you will consider returning with your dog when next enjoying a Holkham walk and find a juicier burger awaiting should you do so.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Standing at the gateway to Holkham and the National Nature Reserve, The Victoria is a classic English inn owned by the Coke family and managed by the Holkham Estate. There are ten elegant, indivually designed and stylish bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. We are ready to welcome more guests in spring 2015 with the addition of a further ten bedrooms just across the road from The Victoria in one of the oldest buildings on the Holkham Estate: Ancient House. The building has been converted to provide ten additional bedrooms, including four spacious family room. The sympathetic refurbishment has retained many of the building's original features, combining authentic charm with luxurious modernity. The bar and dining rooms at The Vic offer a relaxed blend of style and comfort. We serve delicious locally sourced food, much of it grown and raised on the estate, with a bold emphasis on freshness, simplicity and value. Holkham has been a leading agricultural estate since the 1800's when Thomas William Coke bought the site and the young Queen Victoria elevated him to the peerage in recognition of his contribution to farming in 1837. The name of the proposed new inn must have been inevitable when it opened its doors in 1838. ... more   less
