“More Than Just a Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2014

I have been back here numerous times and the staff is always warm, friendly and fun. I stayed in one of the suites; they offer more privacy, your own bathroom, and the one I stayed in has a Jacuzzi. The Hotel bar is extremely well stocked, very reasonably priced and I have found both the bartenders and the patrons to be outgoing and friendly. The food is amazing and offers some amazing dishes you just wouldn’t expect.

If you are into music, this place offers some of the best around. I have been to Blues Fest twice and planning on a third trip this summer. Check out the calendar online or Facebook; there is usually something going on and a great band warming up.

If you want to have fun, relax, eat well, drink well and meet some of the nicest people around, stop and stay at The Trempealeau Hotel. The stress of daily life will just fade away and allow you to breathe again.

We stayed on a Sunday night in October, so it was quiet, and we did not experience the loud partying noise that others have mentioned. The train noise did not bother us much.

We found the room to be cramped, which I expected for the price, but it was not very clean. The ancient mattresses and carpeting were dingy and unclean - crud and dustbunnies in the corners and under furniture. It just needs some deep cleaning. The bed was not comfortable, and the 2 pillows were quite thin. It seems no one is taking pride in those rooms, which I find sad. Whatever charm the place has was overshadowed by being grossed out.

The shared bathroom was okay, but I did not venture to shower in there. Lots of spiders and cobwebs in the bathroom. I'm OK with basic accommodations, as long as they are clean.

The restaurant was nice, and the staff were friendly. I would not stay there again.

Room Tip: The rooms are all very similar.

We are glad you weren't bothered by the sounds of the hotel and trains, but sorry you had such a negative reaction to our cleanliness. Our average rating on cleanliness is 4.5 out of 5. Yes, the mattresses and springs are old and can be noisy, but we do clean each room from top to bottom after each guest including the rugs (there is no carpet in the rooms).

Point taken that not every mattress offers the best comfort, and are in the process of updating them. The pillows are actually new, but not very thick, so that people can put a few together for their personal level of comfort (extra pillows and blankets are in the wooden cupboard in the hallway).

The hotel was built in 1871 and I assure you that all of us at The Hotel take a high level of pride in her beauty.

Thank you taking the time to review our place and while you may not stay here again, we do hope you will check out Trempealeau again.

The Trempealeau hotel and its staff takes you back to an Americian past time that once you experience it you have to return. Those stressful days of our lifes and no escaping from technology just seem dissappear south with the water on the Mississippi.
We love this place and everyone we take along with us loves the place !!!!

Room Tip: When travelling with my motorcycle mates we take the rooms upstairs in the hotel , when with family...

Booked a room for 4. Received a phone call saying they gave our room away and can no longer accommodate us. Now we have a plane ticket with no place to stay. Apparently reservations mean nothing to the new owners.

Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding here and I am sorry for that. We continue to manage rooms for special events in the way it has been done for the past twenty or so years. Guests who had the room previously for these events are called once we re-open in the winter. Everyone from the previous year decided to re-reseve for Catfish Days (July 11-13, 2014) with the exception of only one cancelation for a room upstairs. You were at the top of our "wait list" which noted that you desired one of the King Fisher rooms. I rang to let you know that was not available, but that we did have a cancellation upstairs. When you returned my call you said this room would not work, so I walked you through the various options in town providing you with names and phone numbers of more than five other options. I will continue to try to help you find another place to stay if you did not have luck with those we discussed.

We stayed in a "cottage" on the grounds--clean, with nice amenities. Not fancy, but we are plain folk who don't like fancy. Only complaint is noisy heater. Wonderful surroundings with trains along the river, barges on the Mississippi. The restaurant is fantastic with novel, creative foods with delicious sauces. A great destination with real charm. Plan on returning.
