Owner description: The Historic Island Dairy Building was completely renovated in 2010 from a building that sat vacant for 40 years into a multi-use community facility to save and preserve the memory of one of Washington Island's most important local historic businesses, which was dairy farming. The Historic Island Dairy preserves 100 years of the working memory of the Island community with new economically sustainable non-dairy uses including two commercial kitchens, a full floor open wood cathedral ceiling ballroom, business incubator facilities, vintage Scandinavian poster displays along with international cutting edge art exhibits, lavender farm market, panoramic balcony vistas, sitting and strolling gardens, acres of lavender fields and home for The Island Lavender Company. This meaningful historic Island destination has been completely renovated after sitting vacant for more than 40 years. As a result of the development of refrigerated delivery trucks in the early 1960's, dairy products were delivered from larger commercial facilities off the Island and the local island dairy production was closed. Now bearing the name "The Historic Island Dairy", the building features a permanent Washington Island history exhibit to remind us of the Island people and events that laid the foundation for all of us to protect, nurture and build upon today...and into the future. In 2016, the Historic Island Dairy will celebrate the 100th birthday of the founding of dairy production on Washington Island.

After visiting the Dairy, one can truthfully say that they have experienced a state of 'bliss'. The surrounding Lavender fields and store, along with an old Stavkirke to complete the image, provide visitors an atmosphere of delightful fragrance. Definitely a 'must see' in terms of Island attractions, a place where people have the chance to smile and relax.

We went to a wedding reception at the Island Dairy and it was a great space! Beautiful room, nice kitchen, and fireplace to warm up next to.

The Historic Island Dairy is a new island attraction. For years, this large building sat hulking and vacant, but recently it's been turned into a lavender farm, a lavender shop, and an art gallery. The shop is beautiful with a wide selection of gifts that range in price from the inexpensive (lavender chocolates for $1) to the expensive. I found lavender tea, lavender candles, baking lavender, lavender soap, and lavender sachets for gifts. While many of the items are currently not local, eventually, when the bushes on the farm mature, there will be a greater proportion of local products for sale. This is well worth a visit.

Always dreamed when driving past this place many years ago what I wouldn't give to turn it into a house. I'm so glad someone purchased it and has turned it into some place to be pround of. There is a adorable little lavender shop and wonderful area with history of the island dairy. Upstairs is an amazing event space! Beautiful views of the area out the gigantic windows and back deck. It was a beautiful space for the memorial we had there over the 4th. Will definitely be back!

The lavender shop inside the building was an interesting thing to view. Their products were not only typical lavender soaps and such, but also lavender ice cream and chocolates. Prices were high, but my husband and I did try the lavender ice cream which was a fun experience. Outside the lavender wasn't blooming but would certainly be a beautiful site. The museum was small but it was a fun stop to try lavender ice cream and gaze at the fields of lavender. Overall though, this is one of those places you go once and see no need to go back again.
