If you appreciate woodwork at any level...you will love this place...if you are spiritual...you will enjoy it even more!
They have a prayer path filled with bible verses...if you walk thru the whole path, read them and reflect you will feel peace...they chose verses that can relate to anyone!
Surrounding the church are beautiful flowers and rocks of landscaping. They church is beautiful constructed, inside charming it's lovely!

The Stavkirke is a must visit when you are on the island. There is also a prayer path that is meditative. When we arrived there was a bus full of tourists there so it was quite busy. When they left we were all alone. It was quiet and mediative. There were some stories printed about the build of it which were interesting and made the experience personal. There is no fee, just a donation box to leave a gift if you would like.

The Stavkirke isn't visible from the road, so we drove past it on our first try. It's across from the Lutheran Church, and there is a sign for it. There are paths into the woods that lead to the Stavkirke, but it's a short walk. It was a lovely, peaceful place with flower gardens to enjoy. It's a unique building and interesting to study. It's simple and is what you make of it, but I would recommend taking a look simply because it's unique, and it's on Washington Island.

Honestly, I didn't get it. I thought we were seeing some super old church, but that is actually incorrect. This is a replica that was built of an old Nordic Stave church, and it was built in the late 90's, early 2000's - although you'd never know that by looking at the outside. The inside is extremely small and actually smells like new wood.

While it's a very unique structure, I was not impressed at all - but then again architecture isn't my thing. If there had been more history to it, which I thought there would be and was disappointed by that, it may have been a different story.

This old church is very unique. All wood, and carvings. Nice photo opportunities in a unique setting
