I have stayed here two times with a group of parents and kids when we have biked the Elroy-Sparta bike trail, and I will likely do it again. The campground is great if you want to have a quiet, natural setting without being out in a remote wilderness far from amenities. We put our multiple tents out in the open field part of the park and don't worry about trying to get one of the electrical-hookup sites. There is plenty of room for many, many tents, There is a large covered pavilion with electric for cooking and eating, and clean bathrooms and coin-operated laundry and shower facilities.
Right next to the campground are a pool ($2 entry fee) and two sand-volleyball courts. Add a playground and large open field for soccer, football, or frisbee, and there is plenty to keep the kids occupied. Plus, it's fun to bike around the village to have some pie or check out the old-style hardware and general stores. You feel like you can give the kids quite a bit of freedom to explore around town and they can't get into too much trouble here.
The Elroy-Sparta bike trail is one of the prettiest converted-railroad trails I have seen, taking you through the rolling hills of dairyland Wisconsin. Be sure to bring a flashlight for the nearly mile-long tunnel.
This is a great place if you are into camping, bicycling, and/or canoeing. The campground is nice. Hot showers for a quarter for 4 minutes. Cheap camping. Your choice of sites. Small campground but usually there are electric sites available except for the first weekend in August, and Labor Day, July 4, or Memorial Day.
Access to Elroy-Sparta Trail is great. Kickapoo River is a great place for family canoeing. Our Scout Troop goes there about every other year and have always enjoyed it....except...the first weekend in August is Wood Turtle Days, and the campground is in the center of the action. If you like partying, go the first weekend in August, but if you are into a family outing, I recommend it for any other weekend but that one. Pool is now $2 PP per session...open 11-5 and 6-8:30.
The town of Wilton, WI. provides a park/campground on a first come first serve basis. Being a small campground it's best to get there early in the day, or on "off" days as being a first come first serve you take a chance at all sites being taken. It is a lovely setting in a quiet, friendly township on the middle of the Elroy/Sparta bike trail. Each evening about 6:00 someone from the township comes along and collects $6.00 per site fee for camping, regardless of what you are camping in. The town puts wood out for free when available, firepits are provided, even grill grates utilized from old refridgerator shelving are provided. There are showers, flush toilets, and the villiage swimming pool is available on the grounds, open seasonally for $1.00 fee. The community gives a warm welcome to the bikers/hikers/campers and visitors to thier community. We have camped there many times, tenting, and have only wonderful memories of the area. As I write this, we are preparing to visit the park again tomorrow for a few days. It is only 5 blocks to the Elroy/Sparta bike trail. We take half the trail one day, and the other half the next. It is the perfect spot to explore the Elroy/Sparta trail and surrounding communities. All in all an excellent deal and wonderful time.
