We stayed at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells August 26th - 30th. We booked off season on a special $583.00 for three nights. There were 6 of us ages 56, 30, 30, 24, 9, 6. We stayed in the Frontier section room 690, 2 double beds, sofa sleeper and a small balcony with 2 PVC chairs & small table facing the forest. The rooms have a Northwood's décor and are about standard size wise. The beds were "extremely hard" and the "pillows were even harder". Our room was clean, nice carpet, mini fridge, microwave and a coffee maker. Housekeeping came like clock work about 10am.
The property itself is massive. To big in my opinion to enjoy yourself. There are shuttles (RED, GREEN and BLUE) that will take you where ever you want to go, there are also employees that drive golf carts that will take you anywhere. There is a water taxi (Pontoon boat) that gos across the lake, and Horse dawn carriages rides for free (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday) ALL modes of transportation EXPECT TIPS and TIP JARS are all over the place. The arcades work on PAY CARDS which cost .50. You purchase, load and reload your cards at machines. You swipe you card to play the arcade games. A credit is .25 most of the games are 2-4 credits, but others are more expensive. If the machine isn't working (which allot are not, and have NO signs) you loose your credits. They DO NOT REFUND as its a game of chance!
The resort is broke down in sections, New Frontier, Wild West, Glacier Canyon, Wilderness on the Lake and so forth. Each section has about 1000 rooms. The layout of the place is horrible you will walk and walk and walk so more. Directions are somewhat non-existent.
Each section has numerous additional activities that cost money. You can purchase a "Fun Pass" for $19.00 a good idea if your wanting to do more than 3 things. Not everything is available on the Fun Pass. If you want to go into an attraction with your younger child, my youngest granddaughter is 6 (like 3D golf which is Black light) you need a pass too! Parents are not aloud. The Haunted House scared the *&%# out of my 24 year old son and 9 year old granddaughter. And while we were there a woman about my age (56) ended up with a dislocated shoulder doing the Bumper boat attraction in the New Frontier area. We had dinner one night at the Survivor Bar & Grill. Two kids meals, 2 plates of Nachos, 2 burgers with fry's and pops $75.00! Two of us had the Breakfast Buffett $13.99 per person, but $3.00 for OJ. Good overall selection and the food was good.
In closing its a lovely resort with allot to offer but over whelming. Too much walking or standing around waiting for shuttles and too much extras for spending more money. We have gone to the Dells every year for over 30 years, and have stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge but the kids wanted to try the Wilderness this year. Next year we will be back at the Great Wolf!
