On a 6000 mile roadtrip, I reserved the Hole in the Wall room for a night, to fall between the Badlands, Mt Rushmore and the Devil's Tower on the east, and Yellowstone on the west. Did not tell my wife. As we came into Buffalo after dark, she was completely puzzled where we would be spending the night, after passing by all the properties she considered likely choices. When I pulled up in front of this ancient red brick structure she thought was a feedstore, she was beside herself. Turned out our stay at the Occidental was the highlight of the trip. What a charming place! We absolutely loved it. I have been trying to think of a way to do it again, tho there are too many other places we have yet to see. Only thing I would do different - we would arrive no later than 3 or 4 in the afternoon, so we could view all the rooms before they were occupied. When we arrived, our was the only one still open for viewing.

Tips for travelers, make sure you are going to stay the nights reserved because if you have a change of plans you will not get a refund unless ALL the rooms get rented.
At first sight it is a lovely historic hotel, but our room, Owen Wister, had cockroaches, tons of dead bugs in windowsill, a broken toilet seat, mold on shower curtain curtain, holes in the sheets, very worn bathmat, ripped carpets, and the antique couch had a back that was broke in half. Sure it is a historic hotel but do the basics and the ammenites have to be historic too? For almost $200 a night travelers deserve a lot better quality.
The Virginian restaurant had very good food, but the hostess was very put out when we requested a table away from the front door. Because of her we only ate one meal there.

Room Tip: Room 32 (Owen Wister) is the only one with a balcony

My wife and I were in Buffalo, WY for the July Longmire celebration. Great event in a great little town. If you are fortunate enough to visit, you MUST take in the Occidental Hotel and Saloon. It is loaded with old west history. We were not able to stay in one of the rooms frequented by famous characters like Butch Cassidy or the Sundance Kid (lesson here: make your reservations early), but we did come by the saloon several times for a meal or a cold beer. By all means make this stop on a Thursday night. Several local musicians (I counted more than 10, including David Stuart, one of the proprietors) show up for a musical jam session, featuring a variety of country and western, as well as Bluegrass, including some original tunes. Get there early and have supper; I recommended the open-faced bison burger sandwich. Be sure to drop by the front desk and say hello to Angela. She is a smiling wealth of information and guidance--a real gem.

Linda and I stayed 3 nights in the President Hoover suite. We were very satisfied with the room(s), at least during the time we spent inside...All of the staff members were more than helpful in regards to information about places to see and things to do in the Buffalo/Johnson County area. Make sure to explore the rest of the hotel, you might be surprised at what you might find in the common areas! Now on to the Saloon-it is a must see stop. Make sure you go to the Thursday night "jam session" if possible, just get there plenty early to get a good seat. All of the musicians are pretty good, and audience participation is encouraged. If you like beer, ask Brittany for a "reindeer", and see what you get( hint-it's Sheriff Longmire's favorite ) Nuff said!!! We can't wait to return to this place again...

Stayed in President Hoover Suite on the Ground (US First) floor. Ate in bar as on Sunday the restaurant was closed. Enjoyed too many drinks in a unique Western place with music provided by our host on his guitar.

Food and beer great. Atmospheric and not to be missed!

We stayed two nights in the Teddy Roosevelt room and loved it. The Occidental is a very well preserved/restored example of a true Old West hotel. It is filled with old photographs and antiques. If you are looking for an ultra modern hotel, this is not it. However if you want to feel the true 'Old West', this is the hotel for you. The floors creak, the stairs creak, it has beautiful woodwork throughout. A walk through the saloon is a must but make sure you have your camera! We had dinner in the saloon our first night. The service was slow but the food was good. If you stay on a night when the Virginian is open, it is fantastic! I had the best steak, so tender I didn't need a knife. My spouse had the elk and can't stop raving about how good it was!

Other reviews were a bit mixed so we decided only to stay one night instead of the two originally planned. We should have stayed the two nights. This hotel is absolutely fantastic. We stayed in the clear creek suite at the back, which was a lovely big room full of antique furniture and full of character. The saloon is world class - we have been in bars, pubs and saloons around the world and this one is in the top ten. The bartender was friendly, the locals were great and the atmosphere was great. The room itself is just amazing. The restaurant was equally fabulous, but as it was a Sunday night, it was closed and we had to eat in the cafe. We would have loved to have tried the restaurant, for the atmosphere and decor alone... One point of advice, if you are staying on a night when the restaurant is closed, do eat in the saloon. It is much nicer and has more atmosphere than the cafe. (The only downside we found is that the cafe service is poor and the food not so good - which applied to both dinner and breakfast. The cafe isn't to the standard of the rest of the hotel.)
For anyone from Europe, who likes something historic with class, this place is an absolute must.
