“Vacation of a Lifetime!”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

If you are looking at any reviews from 2+ years ago, disregard them completely...this Ranch is under new management and "service is number 1".

As an active family, we decided to try to take on a dude ranch, and we had no idea what an incredible experience that we would have. Not only was the new management (Kenny and Laura Long) welcoming and friendly, but they made sure that no need was left unattended. There were so many things to do on the ranch and the itinerary was exactly what WE wanted to do when WE wanted to do it. Our family could not wait to go horseback riding. You are assigned a horse for the week, which was well-mannered, and if you had any issue with yours (we did not) they were willing to give you a new horse! We did several rides including an all day ride to an amazing spot called Paradise Valley (the views alone lived up to the name) and we enjoyed a packed lunch with quick hikes to higher spots on the valley for pictures. One day mid week (when we city slickers were too sore to ride) we took a personalized day long tour to Yellowstone...amazing. In one day I felt like we saw the best the park had to offer: geysers, buffalos walking down the road, mud pots, and views that took your breath away.

One of the unexpected highlights of the trip for us was the Cody Rodeo and having the experience of the Crossed Sabres team at our side we did not miss a single trick. It did not look that hard until we had our hand at the mechanical bull...bottom line, those guys are good!

The basics...
Food: Off the charts. Plan on gaining weight, end of discussion. Mary ran the kitchen while we were there and not only was the food incredible, my husband is lactose intolerant and Mary fixed him a "special" plate when dairy was included in the meal. There is also the most delicious cookies available at all times!

Accommodations: Perfect. Rustic cabins, some as old as 100 years old, were clean and comfortable. Our cabin had a porch over a babbling brook which was amazing and tranquil.

Getting to and from: The owner, Kenny, personally picked us up at the Cody Airport and took us back (at 6:30 am to catch a flight!).

Staff: The wranglers were college students with extensive riding experience with not only the horses but people too! Each night we would gather in the Saloon and play games with the staff including pool, foosball, card games, etc. and they were always willing to strike up conversation. They were so fun to be around it made the trip feel as if we went with close friends.

Bottom line is that this is be best vacation our family has every taken and we will definitely be back.

One of my long time friend and I take a vacation every year. This year was on a dude ranch. How fortunate we were to stay at Crossed Sabres Ranch. I give this ranch a 5-star across the board. From the time Kenny Long (new owner) picked us up at the airport to the day we left, we had THE BEST time. We hiked, rode horses (especially suited for us), toured Yellowstone National Park, went white water rafting, tried out the fly fishing on the Shoshone River and a trip to see the town of Cody with all it's history. The food was so good I hated to leave. The staff was so accommodating and aimed to please. The only thing bad I had to say is that I couldn't stay longer. I plan to go back next year. If you are looking for the perfect vacation, Crossed Sabres Ranch is THE place to stay at.

Room Tip: We looked at many of the rooms on our tour and they were all good. You can't go wrong.

We stayed five days at the newly managed ranch. We decided upon this ranch by calling ahead to inquire about the style of riding. When we were told it would NOT be "nose to tail" trail riding, we booked. The horses were some of the best stable horses we have ever ridden. The horses are responsive, well trained and well mannered making for enjoyable, relaxed rides. With access to the adjoining national forest, the riding options are endlessly various. The wranglers, Sam, Nakheel and Greta are all delightful young people. Really, the entire seasonal staff are very easy going and patient. We enjoyed that the wranglers and much of the staff took their meals with us, family style, reinforcing the inclusive feel. The cabin we stayed in was modest and spotless. Right up against Libby Creek, the white noise, peaceful setting and darkness made for deep, restful sleep. The food Mary the cook created was, in a word, amazing. The cuisine is homey, plentiful and delicious. Nothing institutional here, all being made from scratch. All through the day, the cookie jar is out with fresh homemade cookies. Finally, the Long family is a wonderful host which made us all feel welcome and relaxed. They couldn't do enough for us during our stay. The succeeded in making us feel very much at home.

Great setting with a stream right by the cabins. The owner, Kenny, was great about communicating along the way and gave us a nice description of the interesting history of his ranch. A quick drive to Yellowstone's east entrance, and pretty sights along that short drive as well. Cabins were clean and well kept during our stay. Would definitely stay there again.

We stumbled upon the ranch on our way to Yellowstone, looking for lodging. What luck! We were on a six-week road trip around the US and this was definitely the best place that we stayed, and one of the best experiences of our vacation. The new owners offered limited services but more than made up for it by offering suggestions of places to go for food and entertainment, and with their incredible hospitality. We were given free range of the ranch and our kids (8,6 and 4) loved it all. We were shown around the property, the private horses were taken out for us to have a look at, and they even taught the kids how to throw a lasso. The kids were able to practice whenever they wanted. There was a pool table as well as games in the main lodge that we used, and the kids had fun sitting in the covered wagon and playing horseshoes in the paddock. We had our own two-bedroom cabin which was perfect, rustic but clean and lovely. The owners shared all their plans for the ranch and we can't wait to come back when it is a working dude ranch. I can't recommend it enough.
