“Diane, Johnny, and staff were great!”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

We were so pleased with our stay at this ranch! The cabins were clean and comfy, but the staff's friendly and accomodating attitudes is what really made our stay so great. It isn't a fancy place, but we liked that we could really get a feel for the laid-back lifestyle and everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to make our stay memorable. We would definitely recommend it to anyone. Its a beautiful area, close to Yellowstone, with all the amenities of the surrounding guest ranches. We took our family of 5 children ranging in ages from 19 to 8 and we all had a great time, there was something for everyone. We found it hard to leave!

Our family of four booked a weeklong stay at Blackwater Creek Ranch earlier this year. Driving from Iowa to Wyoming, we were concerned we built the trip up so much in our heads that there was no way the actual vacation could meet our expectations. Luckily, we were wrong.

We loved our time at the ranch. Our cabins, while rustic, were clean and comfortable. The food was incredible (the ranch has a chef this year, as opposed to a cook) and we had a great time completing all of the activities available to us -- horseback riding in the mountains, visiting Cody, whitewater rafting, attending the Cody Rodeo, touring Yellowstone, etc.

It was the staff that made our stay so enjoyable. Johnie and Diana have made it their goal to bring southern hospitality to Wyoming and we think they succeeded. We felt more like family than guests. We enjoyed our time with all of the staff members. The wranglers are a great group of experienced horsemen and horsewomen who had endless patience with us and our kids. Having meals in the lodge was more like an extended family dinner, with the servers getting our picky son to actually eat his salad every night. Of course, he had three S'mores at the campfire later ... :)

It was sad for us to say good-bye because we were not only leaving our vacation behind, but a group of people we now consider family. We hope our paths cross again someday. Trust us when we say this trip is worth it.

Room Tip: If you want to get to bed early, we suggest choosing a cabin away from the campfire as guests like t...

stayed in late august, so there weren't many guests. great place, lots of nature. fishing in the morning. walks anytime of the day. lots to do. close to yellowstone park or cody, wy. wish we'd had time to stay a few nights. kinda pricey but no more than hotels/motels in town. don't expect hotel luxury bed & linens ... it's a cabin for goodness sakes. staff was very enjoyable.

What a great place to relax and enjoy nature. We took advantage of a lot of the activities in the area since its so conviently close to Cody and Yellowstone, but you can really have a great time just hanging around the ranch. Their staff was very informative about the area, and friendly. The cooking was real home cooking, which we loved, and the accomadations were a little rugged but comfortable, cozy and clean. We have visited surrounding ranchs, but I think we've found our favorite. Can't wait to go back next year!

Room Tip: The one we stayed is was great. We got a tour of a few others and they all seemed to have their own...

Blackwater Creek is one of many guest ranches between Cody and Yellowstone NP, which all seem to offer pretty much the same thing. We went to Blackwater as the lady in the tourist office said she'd heard good things about the food.

It was the end of the season, so we were the only guests, but we were made to feel very welcome by Diane & Johnie and all the staff, joining them for dinner in the evenings.

The cabins are rusic, but they are clean and comfortable and the owners are working to upgrade them.

There were a number of things that made our stay special, the riding with Joe (more about that later), Beaver taking Michael fishing & Johnnie taking us out for a late night drive to see if we could spot any animals. Johnnie was also really informative about places to visit and advising where we could see wildlife. In reality nothing was too much trouble.

But it was Joe the wrangler that made Blackwater really special to us. I'm a nervous rider, but the moment I met Joe I knew he would take care of me. He's been a cowboy all his life and we truly enjoyed our conversations with him whilst on and off the trail. We enjoyed the ride so much we went for another one on the day we left.

I'm sure it would be a totally different place when full in the summer, but we liked the fact that we were the only ones there!

A couple friends and I were in Cody on a fishing trip, we were camping in the National Forest. On our last day in town we decided to get a cabin before we left for Jackson. We picked Blackwater Creek Ranch. The place is under new ownership. The new owners were great hosts, and they have done wonders cleaning the place up from the previous ownership. The dinner and breakfast was top notch!

I recommend this place to anyone visiting the Cody/Yellowstone area.
