“Great Place to Stay For Family Vacation!”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

We stayed the first weekend of July, and could not have been happier! The food was good, the lounge/bar was fun to hang out in, and location was perfect for going into Yellowstone...The kids did a horseback ride, and they want to go back next summer!

This well-run lodge, consisting of individual rustic cabins, is a sure thing! The owners -- a former rancher and school teacher -- run a tight ship with well-maintained, cozy cabins, a down-home restaurant with solid comfort food, and welcoming hospitality.

We stayed there two nights and were very pleased with our experience.

I would like to thank everyone that wrote a good review-we followed your advice and were not disappointed! The cabins were clean and comfortable-myself and my two sons ages 21 and 15 stayed in the Sundance cabin, our friends were in Longhorn for 2 days then moved to Trapper. The deck on the Sundance cabin had a fantastic view of the mountains surrounding the area, and was a great place to get together with our friends to socialize after the days events. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the restaurant was top notch. They also have their own spring water on site. Great location between the park and Cody. There is no Wi-Fi or cell phone service, but I enjoyed being disconnected for a few days (although my sons would probably disagree-but I didn't have to pry them away from their phones!) I would highly recommend this lodge to anyone that wants to get away from everyday life for a while and enjoy the outdoors!

We stayed here one night in mid-June. Had dinner in their restaurant and also breakfast and both were very good. Their hospitality was very nice. They have a cluster of cabins around their home and restaurant buildings. The cabin we stayed in had two beds in a small room with a side section where there was a shower and sink. All was clean and well maintained. The area is great with the Shoshone River just across the highway and deer and other wild life occasionally crossing the large front yard. The drive along the highway is one of the most scenic in US. The only downside was that it is a little expensive, but very nice for a civilized back country living experience. One clearly avoids the hectic conditions in Cody.

Family of six, 4 kids 16, 14, 12, & 6. Stayed in Buckaroo cabin. Used our own air mattress, which made it crowded. I don't recommend this configuration. I did ask ahead and they thought it would work. Other cabins might be better for large families.

9 miles from east entrance, 40 miles from Cody. I figure that saves two hours traveling each day.so I highly recommend this location.

Cabin clean, quiet with no issues. We even had an enclosed patio. Horses on site available for trail rides at additional cost.

We did hike on the first day, but there are no marked trails. We asked and we just had to wander in the back. So obviously we didn't go too far. A marked trail would be a good addition.

Ate breakfast there in the very nice restaurant, and servings are large. I only could eat half of my pancakes. Kids only ate half too. I recommend ordering smaller sizes for breakfast.

The prior reviews were right, a great place to stay, located just outside the east entrance of Yellowstone. The cabins are charming and spotless. We stayed in the Rendezvous cabin, two bedroon two bath and a loft with a kitchen. It also has a large patio deck out front. Great accomodations for two couples or a family.

They have their own horses on the property, wish we stayed more than a day so we could have gone on a ride.

The owners Kevin and Debbie Millard, make you feel right at home like family, they are hands on people and will make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Their staff is friendly and attentive to all your needs.

The dinner and Breakfast were outstanding. Kevin does a lot of the cooking at the barbecue, likes to cook the steaks. We had some fabulous trout for dinner. The breakfast pancakes are hugh. Try the homemade cinnimun rolls, try to stop at one ??

Good modern cabins in a beautiful and peaceful location. This was my second time there. About 45 minutes west of Cody and 15 minutes east of Yellowstone east entrance. Exceptionally nice staff, especially Debbie and Snow. Small playground for kids, horse shoes, horse back trail rides, rockers, porches with chairs. Tons of silence!!! Just across the highway from the Sheshone River. Highly recommend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Elephant Head Lodge is a small AAA log-cabin mountain resort located just 11.7 miles East of Yellowstone National Park and 40 miles west of Cody, WY. The lodge and most of our cabins are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It gets its name from a rock formation overlooking it. The Lodge, Restaurant, and the "Trapper" cabin were built in 1910 by Buffalo Bill Cody's niece, Josephine Thurston, and her husband Harry W. Thurston. Harry chose the site for its dependable water for early travelers to Yellowstone - and for trappers and Indians. Our small lodge is a wonderful base for touring the Yellowstone National Park, Cody, and the Shoshone National Forest. It is a great place for horseback riding, relaxing, fishing, hiking, and viewing wildlife, as well as good homecooked meals, with homemade bread, soups, and desserts, as well as famous homemade cinnamon rolls. Cabin rates vary depending on size (house 2-8 people per cabin)& accommodations (some with kitchenettes). High season rates Memorial-Labor Day $153-356/night. Low season rates May & September until early October $137-320/night. All with bath(s) & non-smoking. ... more   less
