“A real gem en route to Yellowstone”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2009

We stayed several nights at the Elk Mountain Hotel and Restaurant en route to Yellowstone in September 07. Unlike many new hotels and motels that we encountered on our travels this hotel was filled with elegant charm and historic significance. We used it as a good base to explore some of the local areas such as Saratoga and the Snowy Mountains.
Our friendly hosts made us feel welcome at all times, the food was delicious (Buffalo steak was a favourite) and our room was very comfortable with old style furnishings and modern facilities.
The quiet, secluded grounds gave us the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind before continuing on our road trip. We have wonderful memories of our Wyoming vacation.

This place is truly a jewel in the rough!

A bunch of us were travelling through the Medicine Bow forest on a 4x4 trip (breaking in the new FJ Cruisers!) and found this place off the I80. It blew us away... The owners laughed when they saw 4 VERY dusty couples arrive, and it took us seconds to realize we'd found a genuine oasis. We hadn't booked but we all had amazing rooms, each one named after some famous locals. Actually, the place is so full of genuine history, we loved it. I checked out the website after we got home and there are some interesting stories on it... but back to the review... We even had an en suite jacuzzi which after hours of bouncing around on the trails felt like heaven! That was a weird combination of modern luxury and old world charm.

Dinner was simply outstanding. We didn't have much hope when we looked at Elk mountain on the map (it's tiny!), but the owner is a top Paris chef or something and we still talk about 'THE MEAL'! Seriously, we've all eaten at some pretty swanky places, but this little hotel in this tiny town tops everything. The wine list is way beyond what you'd ever need, and we had some great advice from the staff for main courses. It was delicious, and if we lived in Wyoming we all agreed we'd make the drive back just for a meal.

After a lot of wine and a lot of whisky (the owner showed us how to sample a few different types which was a nice touch) we went to bed... I read a review about noisy rooms, but all we heard as we fell asleep was the river outside. Not a bad way to end the day...

All 8 of us were so disappointed to leave, none of the other hotels on our trip came close, in fact most hotels we stayed in apart from this one left us pretty cold. This one was special though, it really made our trip ...

  • Liked — Incredible food and lovely rooms, nice staff too, really interested to help us.
  • Disliked — We don't live anywhere near it!

Just a couple miles off the interstate, but like a step back in time. If you're a history buff or just enjoy traveling back in time, you need to plan on staying overnight here.

This hotel is over 100 years old, but it's been refurbished and is simply a grand ole hotel now. You can walk in the area and you might see some wildlife. We enjoyed talking to Susan (owner and chef) about the history of the hotel and how she and her husband ended up in Elk Mountain, WY. This is just a fun place to stay.

Don't expect much when you reach Elk Mountain, WY, but this place is well worth the trip off the of the interstate.
