What would make a seemingly rational, retired Physician, consider a winter trip from Sun Valley, ID to the Eastern Wyoming Elk Mountain Hotel? Well...the answer is obvious! This year the 600 mile trip through the "Blizzard of 2010" ...requiring 2 days instead of the usual 9 hours was a weather crapshoot...but well worth it! The answer is equally simple........great food, great hospitality, and great, historic accomodations!!! So we did it for the Thanksgiving HOLIDAY and we are glad and grateful that we were able to complete both the TO journey and the FROM journey safely!!

A wonderful place...warm, cozy, and with great to WONDERFUL food, service, and hospitality. Thanksgiving dinner with our friends from ASPEN (Snowmass), CO was an outstanding event.

We got out in the - temps and the extremely minus temps to photograph the area...and we were welcomed back at the HOTEL with warm coffees and the like!! Deer, elk, and the like make this a fun place for amatuer photographers. We did not bring our studded tired mountain bikes this trip ...but we could have!

In conclusion: This is a great place...........for fun, food (super EXCELLENT), and hospitality..................Try it .....you will like it............we are coming back and that means a 1200 mile round trip.............and we have great restaurants here in Sun Valley......so there must be something special at the Elk Mountain Hotel and the Elk Mtn Restaurant!!!

This is a really unexpected gem in the wilds of Southern Wyoming. It has an ambience shrouded in charm, mystery, glamour, romance and to stay here is a unique experience you wouldn't get with a chain hotel/motel. The place is oozing with history and continues to be somewhere quite special as a convenient stopover across the empty expanses of the old west. Susan and Arthur are very pleasant and are well travelled which adds to the uniqueness of this place. It is a little more pricey than some but you get what you pay for.

We wanted to get away for a weekend and have a nice dinner. The Elk Mountain Hotel filled the bill in every way. Our room was decorated tastefully with period antiques and pleasing colors. The lobby and sitting room had comfortable furniture and gas stoves. There were interesting photographs displayed of performers who had come and played at the pavillion back in the 50's including Jim Reeves and Louis Armstrong. The restaurant had period style tables and chairs and antiques as well. What was the best experience was the food. The menu was a mixture of classics like fish and chips or a gourmet burger, but offered fine steaks and very inventive dishes you won't likely get anywhere else. This was all offered at reasonable prices for what you got. There is nothing else in town to see or do, but if you want peace and tranquillity, this is the place. We'll be back!

My sister and I were looking for a quick weekend getaway. We wanted to go someplace we'd never been before. The Elk Mountain Hotel was a complete and delightful surprise. The meals were so good we ate there every night. Exploring the old west , the hot springs in Saratoga and Medicine Bow national forest durring the day worked up an appetite for exceptional food and service.

We definitely want to go again.

This completely remodeled 100 year old Inn is a true find. Susan is a Cordon Bleu trained chef and the meals in the restaurant were sublime! I'm hesitant to give this the recommendation it deserves, because I will have to fight all of you for Reservations! Definitely get a reservation soon. This is a little out of the way but makes a great romantic get-away for a couple or a girl's weekend away! There is little else around but beautiful scenery in the Snowy range and lots of history and geologic interest. Great base for hiking and exploring or visiting the Saratogo Hot Springs. Susan and Arthur have maintained the history and the Victorian feel while upgrading all of the amenities! Definitely will return for lots of visits with friends for wine tasting or culinary adventure.

Again...on our trip back from Louisville, KY (USA Cycling Masters National Championships...Patty won her 4th National Championship!) Patty and I were rewarded (again!) with fabulous food, service, and lodging! Susan is absolutely on a roll....with great food, great choices, and superior presentation and wines! What a place in the mid-eastern section of Wyoming!!! We are on schedule to return in September for a little mountain biking and more wonderful food, wine, and service!!!! This is a definitely "Don't Miss" experience!!!! To Susan and Arthur: See you in September as the racing season ends and winter has yet to arrive.... Looking forward to Buffalo Steaks and the wonderful Flatiron steak among the many great choices!!!!
9 hours from Sun Valley, ID......2.5 days from Louisville, Ky!!!! Worth every mile and more!
