“A great adventure with breathtaking scenery!”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

Goosewing Ranch went above and beyond our expectations. We took a few riding lessons before we came to the ranch and with the help and training of the wranglers and practical application (trail rides and arena time), we thoroughly enjoyed the horseback riding experience. We especially liked working with the knowledgeable and personable wranglers. Each of the trail rides, whether 2hr, 4hr, or 6hr, were wonderful -- the scenery is breathtaking -- this truly is "God's country". The staff was very attentive and helpful and strived to accommodate any special requests. The UTV's were a great alternative to horseback riding. We put ours to good use to drive to some nice fishing spots. This trip was more than a vacation. We were able to disconnect from the "outside world" and really rejuvenate. Thank you, Francois and all of your wonderful staff! Mark & Angela S.

Room Tip: We stayed in Cabin #9 second farthest away from the lodge. It's a two person cabin with a king...

Everything about Goosewing ranch exceeded our expectations. As experienced riders with our own horses back in England, time on horseback was our priority. What sets Goosewing apart from other ranches perhaps is the quality of the riding opportunities. The location of the ranch deep in the Gros Ventre valley means you ride straight out into miles of wonderful riding terrain. Vast expanses of flat land covered with sagebrush and criss-crossed with streams and rivers allow for long canters (loping) mixed up with exciting climbs and great views. The wranglers are a wonderful bunch of enthusiasts who were extremely flexible in responding to the type of riding and horses we wanted. There was no question of being stuck on standard trails in a nose-to-tail walk as we have experienced elsewhere on occasion.

When the riding was done the lovely pool and hot-tub were perfect and the evening activities and games were much enjoyed by adults and kids alike. The ranch is small with a real sense of family. The french owner is a constant and positive presence and his personal wine and cheese-tasting session followed by line-dancing was an evening we will never forget. The cabins are delightful and comfortable and quiet and the pancakes at breakfast the best I've ever had.

We were there with our 15-year old daughter and two sons aged 13 and 10 and they all say it was the best holiday they've ever had. My husband, the least experienced rider among us, also enjoyed himself very much more than he expected despite being saddle sore! If you own a seat saver then take it with you as the western saddles feel pretty hard after day one.

We loved our week at Goosewing and hope we'll get to return again one day.

We always dreamt of riding horses in the wilderness and. It's done! Thanks to the Goosewing ranch. The whole staff was very nice and we had some great moments (riding trips with the wranglers, Yellowstone, evenings at the ranch). We loved our week there and will surely go back if we can!

Our family has now been to Goosewing 4 summers in a row, and our kids are already bugging us about making sure we plan a week in 2014! The ranch is a great place for all types of riders from the novice to the experienced, and the staff take great care in matching your expertise and style to your horse. There's something for the kids to do every afternoon after the ride. The food is excellent, and we make new family friends each time we go. The 2, 4 and 6 hour rides are excellent and the Wranglers take great care of everyone in the family - our kids were 7 and 9 on our first trip and they were comfortable on the rides from the very first day. Each cabin has its own ATV so you can go on adventures into the surrounding mountains - and we have seen moose, pronghorn, elk, coyote on our rides and ATV trips. The cabins are cozy and private, the main lodge is homey and there are lots of opportunities for families to mingle and get to know each other. Our kids love the pool and hot tub too. We love the remoteness of the location because it allows us to be a family together free of the ever-present cellphone calls and texting. We will continue to return annually for years to come! Do yourself a favor and give your family the gift of a long stay at Goosewing Ranch!

Room Tip: Some cabins have one room and some have 2 rooms. Cabin #9 and #10 are the most quiet.

My wife and I spent seven wonderful and relaxing days at the Ranch to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. It was a great way to kick off our vacation that included follow-on visits to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. The owner, general manager, and staff really represented the best in class in many functional areas to include dining, cabin accommodations, ground keeping, use of the Utility Vehicles, and of course the variety of activities. We believe that getting to the Ranch was so much a part of the adventure and allowed us the opportunity to view numerous geographic highlights and animal life. Don't let the 17 miles of rock road deter you -- it's not as bad as you might think. The horseback trail rides were high on our list when picking this location and we were not disappointed. The Wranglers were not only subject matter experts regarding horsemanship, but truly helpful and understood the topography, wildlife, and to an extent the flora, which was abundant on all the trail rides. Our dining experience was not 5 stars, but we did not expect it to be. Their wine selection was plentiful. The only downside was the food selection was fixed each night so you got what they prepared, however the breakfast menu was outstanding and very good! On three occasions the wonderful weather allowed the dining staff to prepare and serve the guests out on a covered but open patio. They also created a true riverside cookout with a campfire and guitar player singing cowboy music. All staff members were courteous and went out of their way to accommodate our needs. The Ranch hands were always busy but did not interfere in any activities. The nice thing about this location, atmosphere, and outstanding hospitality is you could pick whatever was available or do absolutely nothing. Relaxation was plentiful at the Goosewing and we highly recommend anyone to include families to choose this destination!

If you are thinking about a ranch holiday, then I would absolutely recommend Goosewing! Where can I start to give an overview? The trip into the ranch itself....well having read some of the previous reviews I feared the worst, I am not a great passenger and get a bit travel sick. However, the road was nothing to fear! The first hour is a normal road with the last 20 minutes of the ride on a more gravel surface. The road is very scenic and the views are outstanding. Because the road travels through the mountains it should be driven at a slow speed. We were picked up from Jackson by Goosewing and the drive was fine, if you travelling to the ranch by car or taxi, just take the last 20 mins slowly and easily and enjoy the scenery (you are on vacation after all!) and it is a comfortable enough drive. On arriving at Goosewing we were greeted by our host for the week and the ranch manager. There were other members of staff working away in the background, all of whom were friendly and introduced themselves at the earliest opportunity. Our cabin was lovely and spotlessly clean...I have stayed in some 5 star hotels that have not been as clean! Every day during our stay the cabin was tidied and clean towels left, I couldn't have asked for more on the housekeeping front. Each cabin has a polaris ranger that you can use at any time. We took ours out a few times in the evening to watch the sunset from different spots. The lodge itself was also immaculate and a great place to meet the other guests and a lot of the staff. All of the staff without exception were wonderful and really helped make our stay great. The food was excellent...every meal was better then the last! I worried because we were travelling with our 14 year old son, who can be a bit fussy at times, but I had no cause to worry. The only meal he didn't think he would like because it had fish in it, chef made him some chicken nuggets instead, no hassle. We didn't even need to ask, one of the waitresses had overheard him telling me he wasn't sure he would like it and just organised the alternative...absolutely first class service. For lunch most days we were out on trails so had packed lunches. Again the service for these was great, you fill in a form the night before, there are some options, but if you want something different just ask. The reason we came to the ranch in the first place was obviously to ride....and again we were absolutely delighted with the quality of the rides and the service from the wranglers. As a family we are novice riders and we were very well looked after. The wranglers gave us good tips on our riding when we were out and about and we also had arena time every day. Before our first ride we were offered helmets ( I noted that another reviewer had commented on no helmets) but we went for our new cowboy hats! We went on a different trail every day and each was more beautiful than the last. The wranglers that took us out paid great attention to our ability and what we wanted to get out of our time at Goosewing, they were all very friendly and approachable and I felt very comfortable with them and trusted their expertise. The other activities were all well organised and supervised and we managed to have 7 nights with a 14 year old who was NEVER bored....and never played a computer game for the whole week!! So all that is left to say is to Francois, his lovely wife Bridget, the ranch manager Amy and all her team, thank you for a wonderful, memorable week and we hope to see you all again!

All in all, we had a nice stay at the ranch. The site is beautiful. You really cant ask for a better setting. Rolling hills, wildlife and great trails to ride.
We did have some thoughts on our stay though.
One, the food wasnt all that great. The breakfasts were wonderful, cooked to order. The lunch was ok, we really ate away from the ranch on a trail every day, so we had packed lunch.
The dinners were another story. They werent good. The first night was prime rib and that was nice, but it went down hill from there. They had ribs the second night that were very fatty and too sweet. The next night they had sirloin and roasted chicken, which was nice. After that, sirloin and roasted chicken again, in the form of fajitas. It was ok. The next night, the same reheated chicken again on over-cooked pasta with canned sauce. Very overcooked Tilapia (not what you might think in Wyoming) with pasty overcooked rice was next, with no seasoning on the fish or rice. Fatty brisket the next night. As a New Yorker with access to the best food around, it seemed like a let down. I believe I bbq better than they do.
As far as the activities, they did them. I got the impression they did them just to say they did, but not in the interest in a great immersive experience. We only got 5 bullets at the target range. It wasnt worth the time spent showing up for. The archery was dangerous with multiple kids loosing at once.
The fly fishing was spectacular, if you have your own gear and know what to do. If you dont, youre in for a rough ride. I had to help the other guests rig their rods and give them flies they could manage, as no one at the ranch, except the owner, understood the basics of fly fishing and the gear they lend out is frankly, crap. Francois understands fly fishing and gives a tutorial, but dont expect any hand holding whatsoever. If you want to fly fish here, stop in Jackson and go to a fly shop to ask questions before arriving.
The ATVs are a wonderful addition to the experience. That are well maintained, and really are the best way for you to explore on your own.
The horse riding was great. The ranglers were pleasant and fun. This was another highlight of the ranch.
The cabins were nice and clean, although spartan. I found them to be comfortable. No towel issues as another reviewer mentioned.
The staff overall seemed nice, but after a week there, I felt like I really didnt know too many of them well, and there was no formal introduction (in fairness, we arrived 10 minutes into dinner the first night, so maybe I missed something). We stayed at a Colorado dude ranch last year and in the guide book, they had a bio on all the staff as well as a formal introduction process. That would have been a better way to go. Expect the staff to do their jobs, but not much more. There were one or two shining staff members though. I only saw the manager twice the whole time I was there.
Last, I would recommend you stop in Moose or Jackson and buy your own beer, wine etc. You wont be allowed to consume it with meals, but youll save tons of cash in the end.

Amy W, General Manager at Goosewing Ranch, responded to this review, 8 September 2013
Dear Jimmy229oz,

Thank you for taking the time for this detailed review of Goosewing Ranch.
We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us overall, and especially our beautiful site, wonderful breakfasts, nice prime rib, nice sirloin steaks, wonderful addition with UTVs, nice and clean and comfortable cabins, and our nice staff!
And we are equally disappointed that we couldn’t provide you with a truly unforgettable experience. We can and will address some of the issues you have brought to our attention, while we feel some others are beyond our control.
Our food: We continuously change and adapt our menu to offer more of a ranch variety of food. We are also able to accommodate kids taste, and numerous dietary restrictions with notice. We try to offer good, healthy home cooking, with a variety of dishes that will balance a weekly diet. Everything is homemade, and we certainly do not reheat the same food again and again. We have chosen to serve tilapia for a fish dinner because it is not to “fishy” or full of bones, so most kids and adults would enjoy it. And we keep the seasoning on the side for the same reason. We did in the past propose trout or salmon, and a very large number of our guests elected for a substitute. Anyway, we will continue to advance our culinary skills and consistency, trim the fat in our meats, and improve our meals based on our guests’ tastes and desires, all the while giving it that Wyoming flare.
Target shooting: This year there is a national ammunition shortage since the tragic Sandy Hook shooting. Especially 22 ammos are quite impossible to find. And still, this particular activity is perhaps our most popular one. Well, we had to drive once every other week for 3 hours and then queue for an hour early in the morning to be able to get a few, and then drive back for another 3 hours. And so, we have been able to continue to allow all of our guests to enjoy target shooting by limiting the number of rounds allowed to each person. Sorry, 5 rounds per person sometimes was all we could give our guests in 2013 despite our best efforts.
Fly fishing: We advertise that we offer fly fishing gear and 101 instructions, not a guided service. The Gros Ventre River, its tributaries and lakes in our valley, are non-commercial: no guiding is allowed. The owner Francois is a registered agent of the Wyoming Game and Fish, and took an oath to enforce rules and regulations, and is taking this position very seriously. While he actually gives a lot of tips about the fish, flies and the waters around the ranch during his fly fishing class, he or anybody else just cannot physically guide on the river or lakes in our valley. Also, our fishing gear is put away below a sign “ask for assistance”, and the nice and fancy gear we loan out for fishing is different than the basic, cheap and expendable equipment that we loan out to novice anglers or children for practice on our lawn or in our pond. Francois does explain all of this in his class, and regrets that you didn’t have the opportunity to attend it or even discuss this with him. Your input would have been indeed very valuable.
Regarding our activities in general, we offer structured and non-structured activities during the morning, afternoon and evening. All activities are ranch or western themed. All of our structured activities are guided by safety conscious individuals. Archery and target shooting are very serious activities that are started off with a safety course and instruction on proper handling. And still we require that parents be responsible for their children during these activities.
Our staff: The staff at Goosewing Ranch all works extremely hard to provide all our guests with a safe and memorable vacation experience. They go above and beyond by taking the extra time to double check that each person likes the horse and saddle they rode on, or to find out if someone’s child would like something different for dinner or dessert. The staff of Goosewing Ranch isn’t just employees of the ranch, they are the ranch. They are what makes each individuals vacation unique and special. I feel that the numerous positive reviews about our staff members and activities prove our point.
Every Sunday our wranglers will stampede 60+ head of horses out to the main pasture in front of our lodge, just before dinner. This is a great photo op and a chance to mingle with the staff and our other guests. As you point out yourself, you missed all this due to your late arrival. In the future, we will make sure that we give our late arriving guests another opportunity for introduction.
Alcohol: Beer, liquor, and wine are available at the ranch at a FAIR rate and selection. Yes, our selection is smaller and our rates are higher than what you will find in New York. Alcohol prices in retail stores in Jackson Hole, Wyoming might be sometimes twice the prices in New York - transportation costs, volumes and location being the reasons why. Our wine and beer list with prices is available on our website. But please feel free to bring your own to the lodge for dinner; there is just a corkage fee that applies when doing so.

As the General Manager, I am sorry that you felt that I was only available to you twice during your stay. Thank you for your feedback; it will help us improve our services.

Sincerely,
Amy Worster,
General Manager of Goosewing Ranch
