We drove to the elegant Amangani Hotel to enjoy a drink at the bar, the Teton Mountain Views and a Jackson Hole sunset. Unfortunately, we were told by the valet and hotel "greeter" that "without a reservation, we cannot let you in. We are full." Even though we informed the hotel staff that we had stayed at the Amangani before and had stopped by for drinks on several occasions, we were prohibited from entering the hotel. This kind of inhospitable treatment is totally out of sync with the mission of the Aman hotel chain which prides itself on high levels of service and hospitality. I usually try to focus on the positive aspects of my travels (see my other reviews) but this shabby treatment merited a review, especially as I have stayed at and patronized this hotel in the past. Perhaps there is a new management ethos at the Amangani. Who knows. But I will not be visiting any time soon to find out if improvements have been made.

For a relatively inexpensive, but fabulous view of sunset behind The Grand, stop at the Amangani and relax with your artfully prepared Martini in the library bar. There you sit, high atop the hills that are home to the Amangani and Spring Creek Ranch. It's on the road that joins Jackson to Wilson. (You might, as I did a couple of years ago, find myself trapped on the road as the wranglers move the herd from one side of the road to the other). If you are lucky, Tony will be your server and bartender. He is extremely cordial and informative as he spends most of his non-server time accumulating information about all there is to do in the wonderful town of Jackson. I would skip having dinner in The Grill if you want to continue to enjoy that sense of well-being and serenity that the Library Bar and its surrounds.imparts to you. (Remember that this is only a review of the Library Bar.) You will love the Bar.. You will also love the tasty Native American Indian memorabilia scattered throughout. There is a spiritual feeling here that is so different from being down on the flatlands with the rest of the tourists.. .

Great place with impeccable service. Superb menu and wine list. Expensive, so reserve for a special meal, but everything was done very well. Nice live music to make the mood meet the view.

The Amangani is upfront about being expensive and has decent food, but portion sizes are small. It also manages to make the food physically hard to eat, for example the fancy cup they serve chocolate moose in has to be held to avoid tipping it over, as opposed to just using a bowl which would actually be constructive. A more traditional salad presentation would also be easier to handle, it is up to you to cut and distribute the cheese wafer in way you can get the material with a fork.

Service and ambiance were about average although the presentation of the food creates an aura of pretentiousness. The restaurant is hard to find since there is no signage within the Hotel but it is on the right on the lower level as you enter. It might have OK views during the day if it is not foggy, but fog is common in winter.

That said, it is better than the Granary in many ways, so if you absolutely can't get into town and are hungry enough it may be worth throwing some money at the Amangani.
