“The time of our lives”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2011

I don't know where to start because everything was absolutely fantastic... from the initial contact, the easy booking, the helpful information we received before leaving, the warm welcome, the superbe lodging, the amazing horses, the fantastic food, Addie's delicious baking, the drop dead scenery, the great kids programme, the wonderfully fresh air and water, the fabulously adorable staff, the wonderful amenities or the superbe rides... everything - and I mean "everything" - was great. We had the best time of our lives there. I'd always dreamed of taking my family "out west" to experience my love of horsemanship and this was literally a dream come true.

Red Rock Ranch, it's management, staff and owners all work very hard to make you feel welcome, well fed, entertained and share with you their love of the amazing nature that surrounds them. We loved also that this is a nice sized ranch... not too big, but big enough so that the kids have friends to play with and we adults have enough time to make good friends with everyone.

We will absolutely be back and highly recommend the Red Rock Ranch.

Experience
You won’t find a better run ranch. Managers Doug & Addie Hare make this ranch feel like home and are wonderful people. In fact the human experience is arguably the essence of this ranch. The owners, Dave and Debbie MacKenzie, will often have drinks, dinner and breakfast with you, and are charming as well. Red Rock is located in a scenic valley bounded by National Forest; great views – you can feel the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt in the Wyoming wilderness. Crystal Creek runs right through the property. The cabins form a sort of neighborhood, the main dining/meeting area is a great building with incredible Western art. Morning and afternoon rides, swimming in the afternoon, fly-fishing clinics, cowboy campfire singers (outstanding), square dancing, and my favorite: Doug’s sporting clay shotgun course – don’t miss this! Addie leads hikes with incredible vistas if you don’t feel like riding. Kids absolutely LOVE this place – and won’t stop asking when they are going back.

Staff
Friendly, couldn’t do enough for you. Best overall staff in any place I’ve ever stayed. Wranglers were accomplished riders. One was a retired San Diego County Sheriff, others were college students or pros – mostly from Texas (Hurrah for Texas). Kids wranglers deserve all the praise in the world for their efforts with the children. Wonderful professionalism evident in the kitchen staff – they take deep pride in the meals served. Wait staff was the best bunch of kids and so willing to please. The cleaning staff did a terrific job – they always went above and beyond in tidying up the entire cabin, delivering ice in the afternoon, and offering a friendly smile. Ranch hands always worked behind the scene – delivering wood for the fire, keeping the place looking great, mowing, haying, etc. I enjoyed each and every member of RRR staff.

Lodging
Log cabin type individual dwellings with plenty of room, porches; comfortable and clean. Sitting outside your cabin after a day’s ride and just listening to the sounds of Wyoming can’t be beat. No TV, but that’s the best part (I am a TV news junkie) – you just don’t miss the world at Red Rock Ranch. You live life without all the modern distractions – trust me it’s good for the soul.

Food
Hearty, healthy, and outstanding. Chef pays attention to detail. Fresh fruit and veggies, great meats & even fresh seafood!!! Fresh seafood in the middle of Wyoming impressed me. The range of offerings was great. The attention to food should come as no surprise; manager Doug Hare was tapped by Gordon Ramsay to be an apprentice chef in London. In addition to standard cowboy fare they had sophisticated meals with wine pairing. Warning: co- Manager Addie Hare makes the best cookies in all of Wyoming, along with the best bread. She also made three birthday cakes that week which were THE BEST cakes I’ve ever had.

Horses
Multitude to choose from. Well trained and healthy animals. This ensures that you will be given a horse that matches your ability, temperament, and size (I tip out at 225lbs.). Doug Hare makes sure that the horses are ridden for a number of years by the wranglers before they are released to the guests. They know the exact personality and disposition of each horse they own. This was my first time on a horse and I had no problems. Safety is paramount at this ranch. They provide helmets for the kids – all the kids wore helmets. My eight year old didn’t want to at first, but other kids convinced him to wear one (thanks, Luke!).

Facilities
Pristine swimming pool and hot tub with incredible views. Pool towels provided. Kids have their own clubhouse, pickle ball court and other games. There is one washer/ dryer. They have a library. Great campus feel, and they even have a little general store run by Addie Hare. You can buy RRR t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and sundries. Best purchase: Red Rock Ranch belt buckle.

Other Guests
Great group of people. Families, older couples, empty-nest couples and we even had a clan (the Brownells). By sheer chance one elderly guest, Fred, was a former 4th grade teacher of the Brownell brothers (all in their 40s now). Fred can still shoot a shotgun – the Marine Corps never leaves a man. One family came from England. I enjoyed all the other guests; the RRR experience puts everyone in a great mood.

Overall
I told Doug, Addie, Dave and Debbie that I had a Western Epiphany at Red Rock Ranch. The people, scenery, activities and food combine to produce a rare experience of elation. It connects you to an important piece of our heritage and you will discover that old fashioned American values and warmth still exist here. Wyoming will overwhelm all your senses. I joked Red Rock produced many ‘Jesus Christ’ moments – you come over the top of a ridge and see the majesty of the Grand Tetons and gasp, “Jesus Christ!” If you want to experience the Old West and be moved by it, spend a week at Red Rock Ranch.

This was our first dude ranch experience. I can't rave enough about this place. Cabin was clean, comfortable,(beds were great and I have back problems) and very homy. The food was WAY TOO GOOD!! Everyone of the staff was, warm, friendly, and very accomodating. Horses were GREAT......wranglers were very experienced, friendly and safety conscious. Trail rides catered to all levels of experience. There is an activity for everyone. In short all of the staff wants their guests to have the best time of their life. Our 13 yr old grandaughter was busy every minute and never missed TV, video games, or cell phone. The scenery was GEORGOUS. It felt like we were leaving family behind and we will definitely return!!!

My husband and I enjoyed an “All Adult Week” at Red Rock Ranch. Located just outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we found the accommodations to be first-class. This family owned guest ranch left us wanting for nothing. There was something for everyone whether you wanted to ride horses, go fishing, relax with a book, enjoy the swimming pool and hot tub or ride a bike. The scenery is breathtaking and pictures do not do it justice. And in addition to your own picture-taking, Addie gave us a disk at the end of the week with pictures of everyone enjoying activities and the scenery. The horses were appropriate for all levels of riders. The trail rides were as personal as you desired or larger groups if you wanted. We had a chance to work with cattle, too. I, for one, appreciated the schedule and having a guest list in the cabin. It helped me keep a structured schedule and cued me on who the other guests were and where they were from. Thank you! So, as well as there was a schedule, it was flexible.

The cabins were neatly modern but portrayed a great rustic, western charm.

Massages were available for an additional cost one day.

The gift shop held a nice variety of merchandise.

We enjoyed the cocktails and appetizers in the Cross Bench Saloon each evening. It was a nice benefit that beer and wine were included in the “all inclusive price”; however, one could BYOB if they wanted something else. Happy Hour was a great time to socialize, recap the day’s events and talk about the plans for the next day. And the meals!! The food was terrific from the simple to the fancy. With a chef and sous chef in the kitchen and Addie’s baking, there was an endless supply of superb food.

My husband enjoyed the horseback riding and fly fishing. I enjoyed the horseback riding and relaxing in the cabin. I was grateful for the internet access but did not miss cell phone coverage or televisions. We had a New York Times printout at our breakfast tables each morning.

All the employees were friendly, easy to visit with and obviously enjoyed their responsibilities. Safety was uppermost in everyone’s mind and we appreciated that. We found the first night get-together a great time to meet the staff and other guests and the riding orientation on Monday morning to be advantageous and the last night “closing” was a great way to conclude the week.

My husband and I highly recommend the Red Rock Ranch to anyone considering a Dude Ranch experience. They know how to cater to children, as well as adults, with a focus on either or both. Families will love it and no one will be disappointed. It is an excellent value for the money.

The Red Rock Ranch is an outstanding "Dude Ranch" located just outside Jackson Hole in the middle of the Bridger Teton National Forrest abutting Grand Teton National Park. The location and scenery is breathtaking and hard to describe or capture in pictures. The ranch itself is nestled in a red rock canyon along Crystal Creek - one of the best fly fisheries in all of Wyoming. The web site of the ranch provides all the info you require.

The ranch is family friendly with individual family cabins with plenty of room for the kids in their own bedroom, a master bedroom and living room with fireplace. The accomodations are quite comfortable and ranch rustic. Riding is a highlight to the experience of the ranch but not necessary for the equine phobic. There is fly fishing, pool lounging (large heated pool and hot tub), massages and the scenery to view.

Food is included in the Sunday to Saturday stay and is execellent. Beer and wine are often included but any other alcoholic beverage is BYOB. The ranch facilities and decor is obviously western and charming.

While the Ranch is not for those watching their costs, it is a good value for the superior quality of the experience. The horses are great stock. The chance to coral cattle and improve horsemanship with experienced wranglers is great.

I highly recommned the Red Rock Ranch to anyone considering a Dude Ranch experience while visiting Wyoming. You will not be disappointed.
