Most Jackson Galleries are pretty straight forward, leaning heavily on Western art and nice but really pricey sculptures of wildlife, mountains, indians and cowboys. Also, they are clearly, primarily sales outlets. Rare has some similar art, but tends toward the eclectic, combining works from known and emerging artists. I was first attracted by a large outdoor sculpture of a really big sheet of paper being cut by really big scissors (The whole was over 6' tall). Inside, we first found Kevin Box's sculptures mimicking Origami. Maybe these wouldn't really fit the decor of our living room, but they were pretty neat! Also, while I know Rare exists to sell art, it felt more like an art museum. A nice way to spend an hour downtown, and the kind of gallery you want to periodically re-visit to see what's new.
Public restroom is nearby.
