Laramie River Dude Ranch
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 September 2012

It is obvious that Bill and Krista put a lot of thought into this ranch, and it shows...from the delicious meals, the well-kept horses, the limitless places to ride, and the friendly staff...the Laramie River Ranch exceeded all my expectations.

They truly care about their horses and know that they are key to a great "dude" experience, and it shows. They have 70 horses from which to choose, so it is almost guaranteed that the perfect match can be found for any rider with any level of experience.

I found myself wishing I were back there, even weeks after returning home from vacation. I definitely will return and bring as many friends and family with me as possible. I couldn't recommend this place any higher.

Laramie River Ranch is all about experiencing the beauty and grandeur of the natural surroundings through horseback riding and low key, fun activities like floating down the river on inner tubes. It is tremendous fun for kids and adults alike. The staff is thorough and attentive, yet laid back and approachable. We loved our cozy cabin, from which we could see the horses being brought in to the corral every morning, and our horses, with whom we bonded completely. You will love sitting down to family style meals with other guests and staff, and getting to know them. If you want an authentic experience that delivers whatever you please, whether it be learning to ride or improving your riding, while you enjoy the smells, sights and sounds of the West, then the LRR is the perfect place for your next adventure.

Room Tip: If you want extreme convenience, stay in the lodge, it is lovely . . . but we enjoyed the short wal...

What an incredible place. We had such a wonderful time here, and I highly recommend LRR for anyone who loves the outdoors, enjoys good food, and likes a balance of action and relaxation. My favorite part of the trip was definitely the riding—our group consisted of advanced riders to those who did not yet feel totally comfortable on horseback, and the ranch was able to take us on rides that we could all enjoy. The views were gorgeous and each ride was varied. The horses were incredible, and it was clear that a lot of care was taken to match each guest with an appropriate horse. A key was the hot tub and river to relax after a long day of riding or to utilize instead of a ride.

The food was delicious. Red meat lovers are in for a treat (the ribs by the way were definitely one of my favorite meals…) but LRR always had options (and good options at that) for those that do not eat meat or didn’t want it for one particular meal. They constantly had snacks available as well, if you wanted something other than cookies, which were present in every guest room!

Bill and Christa, the owners, made the experience that much more special. They were extremely kind, informative, and genuine. These were qualities that they clearly took into consideration when hiring their staff and therefore seemed to be qualities that the entire staff embodied.

It was a wonderful week and one that I know we won’t forget. It’s a must for anyone who enjoys being outside and active in a beautiful, beautiful place!

What a wonderful family experience! We found Laramie River Ranch after searching the internet and phoning quite a few of the finalists. I spoke with Bill and found him to be positive, encouraging and honest. He didn't try to pretend that his ranch was all things for all people. It is remote. There are no TVs, minimal internet connectability and no cell phone reception. We thought our 10 year old son might go into withdrawal. Far from it! He loved every moment. Already a good rider, his skills were stretched with the daily rides and he was able to go on riding adventures with other advanced riders instead of getting stuck with his slower parents. We did not worry one bit about his safety. The wranglers were very professional and safety conscious without being boring. And what a wonderful group of young people! We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. One activity we really enjoyed was moving the cattle from their pasture into the ranch paddock and back again.

Laramie River Ranch has an on-site naturalist who led hikes for large groups and individuals as the need arose. This was a great way to learn more about the geology, flora and fauna. We also thoroughly enjoyed our tubing adventure down the Laramie River.

Regarding the food and accommodations: Tops!! There were plenty of food options to suit everyone in our family. Our cabin was very comfortable and the beds were great. I found the staff to be VERY responsive to our needs and consistently genuinely cheerful and kind. I did not hear a single cross word among the staff throughout our stay.

Never having been on a dude ranch before, we had opted for the half week option. In retrospect, I wish we had gone for the whole week. There really was plenty to do and it might have allowed us a few more laid back moments in between activities. We can heartily recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away from it all, while making lasting family memories.

Do we have to leave? When can we go back? That was the best vacation ever! Grandma, Grandpa, Mom and Dad and the kids--all of us were sad to have to leave this amazing place.

The staff: Owners, kitchen staff, the wranglers, the managers--were all warm, enthusiastic and called us by name. They made it seem as though we were staying with family.

The rides far exceeded our expectations. The food and accommodations were perfect, the scenery can't be matched. There wasn't a single aspect of this trip we'd like to change. Even our five year old, who isn't ready to ride, had the time of his life. We will definitely be returning.

We had just gotten married and we wanted a somewhat more unique and active experience for our honeymoon. We found everything we could have asked for in LRR – amazingly thoughtful customer service, stunning landscapes and scenery, beautiful horses, staff and management who care deeply about what they do. As we left on our last day, we both felt a twinge of sadness at having to leave such a place of beauty and peace behind.

We arrived late on Wednesday night and were worried that we may have missed dinner. When we got in, we learned that Bill had saved us some of the ranch’s Thanksgiving turkey dinner special! After a long day of travel, the homestyle meal was tasty, nutritious and really hit the spot. This dinner was to be our first experience with LRR’s thoughtful and extremely accommodating customer service that made our ranch experience truly special.

When we wanted to try out fly fishing on the ranch, we learned that we had just missed the day when this was offered. However, Bill assured us that Brian would be more than happy to teach us the basics and take us out for an afternoon. Brian did more than show us the basics - he taught us how to tie knots, how to cast, habits of the local brown trout and the pools on the Laramie River that would be the most likely spots for success. We couldn’t have asked for a more attentive and informative fly fishing session.

Everyone on the ranch immediately made us feel welcome and infused us with their passion for nature and, of course, the horses. The rides and the scenery provided by the ranch’s surroundings were the highlight of our trip. Rides range from half to full day rides that took us through a variety of stunning landscapes – semi-arid open ranges dotted with sage brushes, rolling hills, birch forests and green hay meadows. We never got tired of watching these scenes pass us by as we walked, trotted and cantered through our rides.

The wranglers taught us about our horse’s personality, quirks and habits and gave us a much better appreciation of these beautiful animals. If you’re interested, they would even let you groom and tack your own.

We even got to help round up cattle on the open range and bring them back into the ranch – being very much city people, this was an amazing experience and helped us to bond with our horses and the other guests.

Overall, an amazing experience that made our honeymoon truly memorable – thanks LRR!

What an exceptional place to visit! The sweeping vistas of western landscape alone make the trip worthwhile. Add to that the warm hospitality of the ranch, the sight of all the beautiful horses being wrangled in the morning, friendly dog and cats, fun dining and you have all the great vacation ingredients. I felt I had been away for a long time, even though it was a short four days.
