Owner description: The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site has an incredibly rich history. Run as a federal (territorial) and state prison from 1872 to 1903, it then became the Agricultural Experiment Station for the University of Wyoming after the State Prison relocated to Rawlins. The site is now operated as a Historic Site by the State of Wyoming.

“A very nice surprise”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

While staying in Craig, Colorado, on our way to Devil's Tower, we visited with two gentlemen riding motorcycles. They highly recommended taking the tour of the Wyoming Territorial prison in Rawlins, Wyoming. We were going that way, so decided to check it out.
The tour is given by college age men and women. My brother and I had our own tour guide. It was inexpensive and the young man guiding us was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. The tour is a little over an hour long. We visited every part of the old prison and were treated to many stories of the people imprisoned there, the harsh conditions they experienced and three rooms full of memorabilia from the prisoners themselves. Be sure to ask about the infamous undefeated baseball team. Great story. I highly recommend this stop, because there's not much out in that part of Wyoming to distract you.

“Superior Tour Guides”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Our tour guide for this fascinating and unique site was exceptionally well informed and shared her knowledge with wonderful stories. In fact, it's the stories that make this place so interesting. It's not all that large, it's wonderfully restored, and the stories make it all come to life. They've have large photographic portraits on the walls of the prison of the actual inmates from years ago. These photos are so interesting because you find yourself listening intently to the stories while you stare into the eyes of the prisoner. Captivating. Well worth a couple hours of your time.

“Fascinating historical attraction”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Our group of 13 adults really enjoyed this historic site. I found the brochure with details helpful. Mostly, we just wandered around for 90 minutes and soaked up the information about a different place and time. I especially liked the profiles about the criminals who had stayed at the prison. The few women prisoners also had interesting profiles..

The guides in the broom making factory really made it come alive to the school children they were talking to. I don't think it would be very interesting for children under 5.

It was not at all crowded. The price is VERY reasonable. Anyone who likes history or the Wild wild west would enjoy this. You can go through at your own pace.

Plenty of opportunities for pictures - you can even go in the jail cells.

“On our way through town and glad we stopped!”
Reviewed 26 June 2014 via mobile

This was a very interesting and engaging historical site to explore! Had kids ranging from 11 down to 1 and all found neat things to look at and learn about! The old town and homestead were fun to explore and all had period furniture, toys, items to look at. Older kids enjoyed learning about their inmates they were assigned from the visitor center and then finding out their ultimate fate upon completing the tour! Could have spent longer, but the hour and a half we were there were very enjoyable!

“Great restoration and historic site”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

This place has it all. A historic site where we can walk at our leisure or take a guided tour, lock ourselves in a cell, watch brooms being made, stroll down the nature trail and see a 1920s church and log school house. The new Butch Cassidy exhibit is really well done. Don't miss it as you drive to yellowstone.
