The drive from the flats of Laramie to the heights of the Medicine Bow Peak Pass and Mirror Lake is one of the most enjoyable in all the West. The views at the top of the pass are breathtaking and the beauty of the Alpine Lakes is simply indescribable. This trip is really a "must" if you are anywhere close to this area.

Spent a picture perfect day on Medicine Bow Peak with family. Made it to the top on the Libby Lake route (shortest way). Passed thru some snow. Views of lakes. Kids saw marmots and a pika on the way.

Stop by the forest service in Larimie for a hiking map

but don't bother asking them much more - very limited knowledge of this mountain range that is only 40 minutes east. For detailed info pick up "Hiking Wyoming;s Medicine Bow National Forest" by Marc Smith. A great book with info on hikes that range from a stroll to overnight.
Wasn't a problem for us, but bring bugspray due to all the water. And of course sunblock and plenty of water to drink. There is a $5 parking fee - cash of check.
After a hike, head over to Centennial (East) for a bite to eat. Has a few good resturants and nice to site and let your feet take a break.

The upper trails were still under snow Memorial Day. Hiked a bit on top of the snow around a couple of lakes. Beautiful. We wished we could have hiked to more lakes and Medicine Bow Peak. Gets our vote for the number one attraction in SE Wyoming.

Easy to get to from Laramie and so very much worth it. We went in August and the only set back was some weak thunderstorms and lightning.

The public toilets were a bit........ dodgy. Bring some tissues or a toilet roll with you. And maybe a flashlight....

If I recall correctly there is a standard driving route to go along with plenty of places to pull off, park and take an easy hike.

The wildlife was scarce when we were there aside from birds and one mouse, but apparently there is usually more animals around if you go deeper inland from the roads.
