The front is nice; Flowers and antiques. I thought "This is going to be fun." No. I know it's old, but it smells so musty. The carpet is dirty. (I would rather it have the old wooden floors than dirty carpet). This would make a great place to tour, eat and maybe stay in their motel part, but someone needs to get busy and clean, clean, clean.
I could not have eaten there. They should drink at home. It's really a shame.
We didn't stay. Look at the rooms first.

Room Tip: drove on to Rawlins. stayed at the Comfort Inn, twice the $ but worth it.

We visited the Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow, Wyoming. It is located out in the middle of nowhere and with very few trees to buffer the constant dusty wind that is blowing constantly. The hyotel has three floors with a few rooms located on the main level but most of the rooms are on the second and third floors. The majority of the rooms are fairly small with sparse space to store luggage or belongings and most of the rooms have to share a common bathroom located at the center point of the long corridor of rooms on the second and third floors. Only the suites have private baths with claw foot bath tubs. The hotel proper is papered in Victorian gold and burgundy medallion wallpaper, has velvet draperies and pressed tin on its 12 foot high ceilings. The main floor has a "Eating House," the formal "Owen Wister Dining Room," and the "Shiloh Saloon," which still has bullet holes riddled throughout to remind guests of some past shootout. The rooms have antique brass beds which have a tired look to them as a number of the beds had an inward lean from the foot and the head boards., There is no air conditioning in the hotel . As a final measure of the authenticity of the time period when this hotel was completed (1911) there are no modern amenities in the rooms; i.e., no television sets or telephones. But if you want to step back into the wild wild west days you can do just that at The Virginian Hotel.

Room Tip: Would be a good idea to choose a room on the back side of the hotel as there are train tracks across...

Due to bad roads, my pre-teen son & I decided we either needed to stay here or go to Laramie. I do not regret the decision to stay at the Virginan. The staff was nice, food was good, my dog was welcomed, the rooms were clean & the price was decent. If you're looking for a 4 star modern hotel, you're at the wrong place. If you're ok with decent accommodations with a rich history, give it a shot. Trains... Yes, you hear em. Turn the fan for some white noise & its not unbearable. We were allowed to tour the property. Historic rooms do not have private baths but were cool to look at. Rooms on main floor were basic with bath/shower, tv, desk, mini fridge & 2 beds. I'd stay again if need be. I've defiantly stayed in much worse for way more money.

The rooms need some work. There is no aircon. Trains run every 15 minutes throughout the night. But that is Medicine Bow. You have to accept that if you want to stay in the town. The food in the restaurant is worth the wait. If it were any different, it wouldbn't be Medicine Bow.

The middle of nowhere; rooms for your choosing-some feel like a bordelo; walk around the town if you dare; we really loved it! The best places are the most unique. We got to pick our rooms; RR tracks across street so LOUD; food was good; can not beat this experience; our family still talks about it; looking for a chain hotel do not come here; looking for an adventure you got it.

The hotel is full of rich history and memorabilia with pictures and antiques everywhere. The rooms and suites are decorated in themes from the old west and Victorian era. It would make a fantastic bed and breakfast if you changed the staff and kept out the locals. The staff was terrible. We were treated rudely. At first they said they didn't have a room for us because we had a small dog, but after sitting at the bar, another staff member said we could stay in one of the suites (why not-none of the rooms were full). The bartender was so drunk, he couldn't even add the price for two beers. The staff was very rude and unkept. The locals would walk into the kitchen and get anything they wanted, but we saw many travelers turned away due to non-service. They could charge a little more, hire better staff and push the history, then this could be a great experience for travelers.
