Attraction details
Owner description: The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center is located at the site of a former World War II Japanese American Relocation Camp. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese Americans on the West Coast were rounded up and confined in 10 camps around the country. One of these was located at Heart Mountain, and approximately 14,000 Japanese Americans were wrongly incarcerated here. The camp today features a museum, gallery, walking tour, original Relocation Camp structures and a World War II Memorial. The museum features interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages showing how Japanese Americans coped with unjust confinement and how the story of Japanese American imprisonment affects our lives today. A 14-minute introductory film plays several times each hour.

This is a new expanded attraction which started out as a "chimney and a few old buildings". Now there is a fine museum which tells of the confinement of more than 14,000 Japanese Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbour. The museum exhibits explain how the internees turned a piece of desolate land into the third largest city in Wyoming over the period of three years that the camp was open. After the war had finished the internees were offered no compensation other than a few dollars and a train ticket to where ever they wanted to start to rebuild their lives.

There is a walking trail and you can wander around the outside of the original buildings.

A wonderful opportunity to learn about "new history" in an area of so much old history.

This is a worthwhile stop when in the Cody/Powell area (only 15 min drive from Cody). It is a fair and informative presentation of the Japanese relocation center once located there. It is interesting for both adults and children. I learned a lot and could have stayed for several hours. Recommended highly.

Simply wonderful, I live in Powell and have been out to the Heart Mountain site a number of times. This recently opened museum sheds light on daily life at the Relocation center and has so many artifacts from people time there. You can also watch videos about the Relocation center and even hear stories told by those who lived there. You can also get a 'bird-eye' view of what the camp looked like during is opperation thanks to computer generated images. The staff is friendly and helpful and will take the time to explain anything to you. Very sad aspect of history but extremely interesting

From the knowledgeable greeters, to the initial brief DVD, to the numerous push-botton activated multimedia screens to the displays, documents, and huge pics, this is a MUST SEE for folks visiting the area. Fascinating, Historical, & Disgusting. Well done.

Newly open museum on the Japanese American Internment Camp during WWII.
A easy to follow outdoor self guided tour and museum exhibits. Truly moving.

Its about 15 minutes drive from Cody (14 miles east of Cody), take Hwy 14A to Road 19 and follow sign.
