I attended a winter photography workshop and the location was the Hideout Ranch. The accommodations were wonderful with breathtaking views of the Bighorn Mountains. The food served at the lodge is unsurpassed with a varied menu prepared by their on staff chef. I would go back if for nothing else, the food!

The management and staff take a great deal of pride in their ranch and they go out of their way to please.

Highly recommend!

On these New Year's Day, I remember my trip to Shell, WY last year. Good food, charming staff and great rides. Twice we went for a whole day, from the morning when we left on snow and did the long crossing to Red Sedona Rock. Long sunny rides with beautiful vista points. We arrived just in time to see the oustanding sunset on the Big Horns you have sitting in front of the cabin. ;-)

I've been to The Hideout at least 10 times in the past 10 years. It is by far the best guest ranch I know, because of its combination of excellent comfort, real"gourmet" food, and first class horses. Recently they've started a mustang program, and among them are some of the finest horses I've ever ridden.
Every evening, guests are asked what their preferences are for the next day: a half day ride in the valley, two half day rides or a whole day ride up in the mountains, either to do cattle work or for scenic rides that bring you to mountain lakes and vistas so beautiful they make you want to move to Shell permanently. Even if you only choose 2 half day rides, you spend more than 4 hours in the saddle, and 8 hours + are no exception when one does cattle work.
To sum it all up, if one is not happy at the Hideout, it is higly unlikely to find happiness anywhere else on this earth.

Room Tip: Try the "casitas" next time you come: renovated and splendid view.

Beautiful setting in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. Vast areas of land to ride on that require between 30 minutes to 90 minutes one way by horse trailer/truck to access. We had hoped to ride 6-8 hours per riding day but actually spent no more than 4 hours a day in the saddle.
Cabins are well appointed and cozy.

The H, Manager at The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch, responded to this review, 29 December 2012
Thank you for posting you comment about the riding at The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch. We will review the week you were here as it is very unsual that those riders who like to ride long hours in the saddle are limited to days of 4 hours. 2 to 3 hours is what we ride on our 1/2 day rides and 3 to 5 on our 2/3 day rides. And 5 up to 8,5 on our real long days. However not everybody can handle those days and given this is big and remote country we need to make sure that all riders can finish those kind of rides. Some of our guests are great riders but prefer to ride with their less experienced travelling partners. We always adapt rides to the least experienced rider for safety reasons.

As to trucking and trailering it depends where we go for the riding or do cattle work. It is hard on a 300,000 acre working ranch to ride out from the base at 4200 feet to were the cattle are at elevations of 9000 up to 11,000 feet, do a days cowboy work and ride down.
Not all guests would be able to enjoy the mountain rides. And it is hard on any horse, unless every rider takes 1 or 2 extra horses.
However we have done this many times also this season. Most cowboys on remote ranches have their truck and trailer, load up their horses for the days work. Unload where only horses can travel, do a days work and return to their outfit driving down to headquarters or their cabin in the mountains. As we offer a real working ranch and riding experience in a variety of terrain that is what guests can do also.
Some travel from down in the valley up but they usually have 2 or 3 horses for the day as even the best horse will not last that long. And great horses we have.

The fact that we trailer allows those guests wanting to do shorter rides to see different country. Loading up and driving to a variety of destinations is a very practical way of offering that experience. Seldom however will we travel for more than 30 minutes in a truck, except when one signs up for cattle work that is very remote. Again this is a real working ranch and the work our guests do with cattle is the work that is needed for the ranch. We do not make it up, so it is the work that cowboys do.

For some of the trail rides and destinations we consider the guests who are participating in the ride. It might be that for some of these rides we only trailer 20 minutes. At the same time when some of our guests in some groups would like to see that country also, we opt for a longer trip in the vehicles to allow those guests to enjoy that country also. However usually we split up groups of advanced riders when organizing these rides. And of course we also consider our horses in this entire discussion.

However I apologize on behalf of The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch if you did not get more than 4 hours in per day during your stay. That is rather unusual and we will discuss your feedback with our crew to see what the situation that week was and learn from it.

Thank you for sharing your feedback

Peter

The Hideout is what my Dad, sister and I call our "home away from home". We have been going to the Hideout for 7 years now and have shared so many wonderful memories as a family there! The horseback riding is fantastic and there is ride for every type of rider. You can go on scenic rides or see what it's really like to work cattle. The scenery is breathtaking and it is really the most peaceful place I have ever been. Every year I am so impressed with the quality of horses, they are treated with respect and great under saddle. This past summer I got to ride a mustang who was perfect and took such good care of me! The accomodations, staff, wranglers, and food are excellent. My experiences at The Hideout were life changing. Thanks to Peter & Marijn, David & Paula for their great hospitality and for making us feel a part of their family. Can't wait to return and create more lifetime memories.

We are an airline family and have been fortunate to be able to travel extensively. Nothing compares to our wonderful experience, 8/26/12 to 9/1/12, at the Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch. David, Paula, Peter, and Marijn could not have been more gracious. The entire staff of wranglers, chefs, and all, were perfect. Both my wife and I are novices at horseback riding. I cannot say enough about the learning experience we had at the hideout. As seniors (69 & 66) we were very concerned about safety. The great instructions, close supervision, and constant attention to safety details put us at ease and made for an overall wonderful experience. By the end of our stay, we felt very competent in our ability to herd cattle - WOW, what fun! We've had a month to think about how to improve the Hideout, and we can't think of one thing. Of the 25 guests during our stay, three couples had returned for at least their 9th visit. Next year, it will be our second of many. We can't wait to return. Bob :-) & Cindy :-)

Room Tip: All accomodations offer scenic views and are absolutely pristine.

We visited the Hideout for the first time Summer of 2012 and left absolutely convinced it was the best vacation we had ever taken. From the moment the staff picked us up in Cody we knew we had made the smartest decision to come. The staff, head chef, wranglers, immaculate cabins and of course the best-minded horses completed a week we will never forget. Great attention to detail was given along with specially designed ride adventures each day complete with a picnic lunch. The scenic fly fishing was exceptional with quality equipment, professional guidance and knowledge of the river available making it a successful two days for my husband. Every evening was spent with complimentary wine and cocktail hour followed by a delicious meal sitting with the other guests sharing the day's many stories. While the majority of their amazing horses are sound Quarter Horses, their solidly trained Mustangs, which were wild only a few years earlier, also proved to be a trusty ride to cover the ever changing and at times challenging terrain. I rode one the entire week. This offered insight and inspiration to support Wild Mustang training programs with greater awareness and deliberate momentum. If you love horses, nature and want to grow as a new or seasoned rider, book your all-inclusive vacation at The Hideout today. You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: All cabins offer a front porch with rocking chairs to enjoy the sunrise and remarkable scenery.
