We stayed at the Alpenhof during our first few nights in the Tetons before heading into the park lodging. The hotel itself was very well-appointed; we had a King Bavarian room, which was clean, spacious, and well decorated; the people at the front desk were very friendly; the dogs Molly and Sam were charming; and the breakfast buffet that is included in the room cost was fantastic -- far better than your standard continental breakfast. That said, we gave the hotel restaurant two chances for dinner, and both times, service was so abysmally slow and poor, we actually contemplated leaving in the middle of our second meal. On the first night, we thought we were just catching the staff at a bad time and we let it go and just tried to enjoy the slow but tasty fondue. But the second night was even worse. Again, there was one waiter working the entire restaurant. We were seated and then waited 30 minutes -- I am not exaggerating -- before the waiter even approached our table to greet us or take a drink order, and the only reason he finally did was because I flagged him down and said, "Can we at least order some drinks??" There was a woman who came around to pour water, but she does not actually take any orders. Making matters worse, during those 30 minutes, the waiter came to the table immediately next to ours 5 times -- once to remove their dinners, once to take their dessert order, once to bring them their dessert order, once to bring them dessert drinks, and once to bring them the check. In other words, tables around us were going through multiple courses of their meal while we just sat there, waiting to even be acknowledged! I thought, I may as well go back up to our room and lie in bed with a book if I'm going to have to just sit here. When we did order our drinks we also ordered our appetizers and food. The apps arrived within probably 10 minutes; but the drinks were still nowhere to be seen. For the second night in a row, we sat through our entire first course without our drinks. It was ludicrous. I understand that they had apparently downsized their staff for the start of the "off-season" but there is no reason anyone should have to sit there for 45 minutes before being served a drink. Unfortunately, the service was so bad that it overshadowed the food, which was quite good, and left us vowing to never again have dinner at the Alpenhof. Go to Osteria down the road at the Hotel Terra instead!
