“I loved this place”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

This is the best deal on this side of the island. We stayed for 2 days and loved it. The rooms are a bit on the older side, but they are clean. The staff was so great!! Overall, the hotel had great character and beautiful gardens on the property. Very close to the botanical gardens. The pork chops in the restaurant were fabulous. We will definitely be staying here again.

Clean, friendly, efficient, cheap. The Japanese family running this place has been making it go since 1917, and it's pretty impressive. We were very pleased. We paid $65/night... In Hawaii that's a total steal.

We stayed here for two days. Overall great choice.
There was an amazing view from our balcony. It was close to Kona and the coffee farms and Portuguese bread making and the local botanical gardens ACROSS THE STREET! (highly recommend both!)
There was a great garden and great landscaping and lots of chickens so it was a charming little place.
During the coffee tour, we asked locals where we could get some local food and they recommended our very own hotel. The food was local, exotic, sort of retro style, and SUPER inexpensive for what we got. They are known for the pork chops but I thought everything we ordered was great. A filling egg, Portuguese sausage, papaya, and coffee breakfast was also a great deal.

I highly recommend the coffee tour, botanical garden across the street, and sampling (and even helping make!) the Portuguese bread if you stay here. All are a short drive or walk from this hotel.

The only down side was that every morning, the roosters would wake us up. :)
But if you don't mind the rustic feel, that's ok!

This is a great hotel for people with a more simplistic mindset. The decor isn't fancy, there wasn't a TV in our room - really, no frills, but we still loved it. It was surprisingly cheap for an ocean view room, and the view is GORGEOUS, not to mention the grounds themselves are beautiful. Staff is friendly, but we weren't crazy about the restaurant. We only stayed here one night, but we wished we had known about it before booking three nights at Uncle Billy's in Kona. Would definitely have preferred to stay here and will next time!

You'll either love or hate this hotel. It reminds me of the great road-side lodges of Alaska. Lots of old-world history, charm and character. I loved it here. We stayed on the first floor, at the end giving us a nice view of the ocean. Simple / Basic room but clean and quiet and very reasonably priced ($65). Free wifi too. I would definitely stop here again. And try their restaurant which served great food.

I stayed in the communal-bath streetside part of the hotel. Bedbugs weren't immediately obvious as the room was small but clean, and the sheets were fresh; but night fell and out they came, unmistakable. There were two beds in my room and they were in both.

The staff was genuinely concerned, and as I didn't hear about this problem in earlier reviews, I hope it's something they resolve quickly and totally. It was so nice to think I'd found clean, affordable accommodations in that area.

otherwise, it wouldve been exactly what one could expect for the price, and more. talked to travelers staying in the private bath/rear section of the hotel & they were very happy with their digs.

The Manago is old-fashioned Hawaiian with a warm, friendly atmosphere. The rooms are a good size, very clean, and quiet. Our lanai was very comfortable and private with a beautiful view of the gardens and the ocean. There are no TVs or telephones or air conditioning in the rooms. But who wants to watch TV when there is a sunset out over the ocean to watch? At night we used the screen door to the lanai to bring in ocean breezes and slept very comfortably with the ceiling fan. No air conditioning needed. There is also a fantastic restaurant. Definitely order the pork chop. It comes in 2 sizes. The regular is plenty. No need to order the larger size. The hotel is very well located, easy to drive to Kona, coffee farms, or any of the beaches for snorkeling. Because it was the weekend, there was a farmers market across the street where fresh produce and local hand-made crafts could be purchased. Best of all, the hotel is amazingly inexpensive and parking is free. A room like ours with a view of the ocean would cost 4 times the price in Honolulu. My only complaint is that I wish there was a mini fridge in the room as it would have been convenient to have cold drinks while sitting out on the lanai watching the sun set over the ocean.

Room Tip: We had room 214. It was on the 2nd floor which gave us a great view of the ocean. It was also near...
