“Great Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

We visited the Areca Palms Estate B&B for a week from Feb. 20-27 and chose it after reading reviews in Trip Advisor and checking out Frommers and Lonely Planet. Janice and Steve are more than hospitable and are truly anxious for visitors to get the most out of their stay. They quickly supplied us with everything we needed for the beach, including a cooler, beach chairs and umbrella and even replaced beach chairs with new ones the second day we were there. Our room (Rose Room) had been recently updated and was very spacious and clean with housekeeping each day that included making the bed and replacing towels with fresh. We both found the bed to be super comfortable. One can only imagine the time and effort that goes into the fabulous breakfasts that Janice prepares. They are healthy, filling and beautifully presented at 8:00 each morning. While Janice is busy preparing, Steve is available to answer questions and offer advice on any daytripping excursions. In addition, they have a binder that is available to assist in choosing restaurants, etc. in the vicinity. There is some discussion about the "rules" that the hosts have, but they are actually just common sense and are what guests should consider doing without being asked. Thanks, Janice and Steve for a wonderful time!

Lovely home on a big piece of property. Steve and Janice were gracious and accommodating. Janice sets an elegant table with fresh fruits and baked goods. Steve had great advice for things to do and could also help identify local flora and fauna.

We had a great 3 day stay. Our room was large, private and very comfortable, the grounds are beautiful and peaceful, and there is a wonderful covered lanai. The breakfasts are truly outstanding - exquisitely presented and delicious. Very hospitable hosts. Janice and Steve provided excellent information on things to do, made arrangements, and offered beach towels and snorkeling equipment.

Steve & Janice clearly care about their guests having the best possible big island experience. In addition to clean & comfortable rooms, lovely refreshing breakfasts of native fruits, and the coolness of being at 1000 ft, they also provided suggested itineraries, made dinner & activity reservations and provided snorkeling equipment & beach towels. The location was perfect, accessible to the Kona beaches & dining, volcanoes, northern coastal rd and saddle road to the observatory & to Hilo.

If you want to eat the best gourmet breakfast and get treated royally, this might be the place for you to stay. My husband and I stayed here four nights and were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful travel tips, cleanliness and overall ambiance of this place. Not far from Captain Cook Bay that has great kayaking, hiking, snorkeling, and visiting the historic refuge, this place is a quiet stay near Kona.

We just returned from a great stay at a 4 room B & B on the Kona Coast of the Big Island. The 4 room inn is run by Steve and Janice, who are very friendly, warm and engaging. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfasts are delicious and huge (you will not need lunch). Best of all, Steve and Janice have lived there for 12 years and have incredible knowledge of the Big Island's treasures - we discussed each days plans with them over breakfast. (They even have typed sheets for daily itineraries for various regions of the island; in my opinion, more helpful than the guidebooks). They provided (at no additional charge) snorkeling equipment, beach mats, beach towels, etc. A great find where we will stay again on our next trip to the Big Island.
