“Areca Palms Estate Bed and Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

"Areca Palms" refers to the trees that define the boundaries of this 1+ acre bed and breakfast. Nestled along the west coast of the big island of Hawaii, you can enjoy a view of the Pacific Ocean from the veranda where Janice serves a delicious Hawaiian breakfast. She will even "adapt" it to your particular tastes, mine being fruit. Both Steve and Janice were gracious hosts, and their advice on day trips was spot-on. Ask for their written instructions with directions for day trips from the B&B. This was definitely a high point for our first Hawaiian vacation, and we will return the next time we come to Hawaii.

This a must stay location!!! My wife and I were on the Big Island for a friend's wedding/vacation and we chose to stay at this Bed and Breakfast-we were extremely happy that we did. From the day we arrived to the day we left, we were received with nothing but kindness, hospitality, and good fun conversation. Steve and Janice are great people who have kindly opened up their wonderful home and estate in order to share their piece of paradise on the Big Island with visitors.

First off, the view was gorgeous, the grounds were beautifully kept, and their home has a wonderfully spacious and comfortable feel. They have a lanai which faces the ocean and sunset where you eat breakfast every morning and drink a glass of wine, or two, every night.

Secondly, Janice's cooked and served breakfast every morning was AMAZING!!! Fresh papaya, smoothie, and pineapple everyday with alternating main dishes: we had delicious five-star quiche our first day with an "Iron Man Muffin"! The second day, we had the most brilliant granola lime yogurt with cinnamon bagel. The third day, a "to-go" breakfast (let Janice know the night before if you plan to leave early and she will make you the "to-go" breakfast) was made for us because we got an early start to the Volcano National Park and we stopped and ate it along (Janice's) recommended stop at the Black Sand Beach-where sea turtles come up to the shore. The fourth day, we had the most delicious pancake/elephant ear with fresh blue berries. The fifth day, we had another wonderfully delicious surprise of Eggs Florentine!!! Our final day, we received a nice warm dish of waffles and coconut syrup before we boarded our plane back home. Janice truly sets the bar high when it comes to great quality food!!!

Thirdly, every morning at breakfast we had stimulating fun conversations, we felt comfortable to ask any questions to Steve and Janice about their history, how they came to acquire such a beautiful location, and what their past and future held and will hold, they were kind to share their wisdom and journey. Besides the stimulating conversations, Steve provided us with historical facts, an informative sheet of paper of things to do-based on our destination goal for the day, and tips and secrets to great hidden/less touristy hikes, snorkel spots, and beaches.

In conclusion, if your looking for a wonderful place that is a home away from home with all the wonderful tips and secrets to the Big Island and a hearty breakfast with stimulating conversation to start your day-look no further Areca Palms Estate Bed and Breakfast is your place to be!!!

Janice you are amazing, kind, and so accommodating and Steve your wealth of knowledge, helpful tips, and hidden island secrets elevated our vacation to an adventure!!!!

Thank you Janice and Steve,

-Geoff and Nicole :)

Very nice, clean and cosy accomodation. A really wonderful oasis of relaxing in paradise.
The breakfast is easy to describe: WONDERFUL, prepared with love by Janice.
Easy to lend beach equipment and to get good tips for trips, beaches or snorkeling.
All in all, if we return to Hawaii, we will stay there.

The ride to Areca Palms Estate B&B is just the usual Hawaii roadway, but when you go through the entrance, you are in a beautiful delightful world. The grounds are lovely. The place is clean and interesting. The sitting room is warm and welcoming. The rooms are comfortable. They will lend you beach equipment. They have printed directions for sight seeing adventures. But the best part is the breakfast--it is presented like something you would expect from the most elegant restaurant, tasteful, healthy, and you want to come back for more. Janice is a delight and her B&B is great. Without a doubt, it was the best breakfast(s) I had in all my 31 days in Hawaii. Don't hesitate to go there.

The Areca Palms B&B is an excellent choice for stays on the western side of the Big Island. In the town of Captain Cook, it's less than 10 miles from Kailua-Kona, and about a 1/2 hour from the airport. The B&B is just off the main road, up a short single-lane street that goes through an ordinary enough Hawaiian neighborhood.

The house backs up onto nature reserve, however, and the grounds are immaculate. Steve and Janice provide a warm welcome, and helpful advice on places to go and things to see on the Island. Ask for their handy one-day tour guide instructions. A good library of guidebooks is available to guests as well.

Rooms are good sized with comfortable bedding; two with ensuite bath, one with dedicated bath across the hall. Breakfasts are outstanding! Janice bakes and prepares fresh fruit and other breakfast treats. A real highlight!

The location is good for touring the Kona area, heading off to the Volcano Park, and not too far from the north of the Island and Hilo; all destinations are less than 2 to 3 hours away.

This is an excellent B&B for both short and mid-length stays; convenient, hospitable, well maintained, and properly hosted. Though the setting is definitely not resorl-like, the proximity of forest preserve and neighboring houses means you will have some exposure to nature from both the wilds and domestically.

Definitely recommended.

This was a truly wonderful place to stay. The house was old and gracious, with verandas, balconies, and big screened windows. The grounds were immaculate, filled with beautiful plants. Our room (Blue Willow) was cozy, very comfortable, and beautifully decorated; we were glad it had no air conditioning (makes us too cold), but instead, had a beautiful evening breeze coming through the windows. Janice and Steve had prepared a list of nearby restaurants, complete with menus, and the two we tried were both excellent. They also had very good suggestions about what we would enjoy visiting. Best of all, the breakfasts were magnificent! Janice loves to cook, and has a vast variety of delicious breakfast offerings, always including generous servings of fresh Hawaiian fruit. Thank you, Janice and Steve, for our wonderful stay! We would love to come back.

Reasonably priced and very nice B&B, the owners are attentive and very pleasant. The room we had (Rose room) was large and very comfortable, the owners clean the rooms daily. This is not a typical cheap breakfast served up, Janice is a terrific cook!!! I can't imagine a better value in the Kona area, thanks Janice & Steve!!!!!!
