“Peaceful and beautiful view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2010

We stayed for 4 nights this summer and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially the breakfasts! Every morning it was exciting to see what was in our breakfast basket. It was always fresh, exotic fruit, with hard boiled eggs and a baked item. The scones were particularly yummy. The Lookout was like a tree house, with wonderful views of the water.
It was conveniently located to beaches and snorkeling and our hosts were very helpful.

If you're looking for a true island experience then this is the place. We felt like residents instead of tourists. Great access to snorkeling that only the locals seem to know about.
The view from the balcony is mesmerizing. Waking up to a fresh cup of Kona coffee and taking in the sights and sounds of nature made us want to stay forever. We can't wait to return.

This was a great play to just relax. We stayed on the lower floor floor, which had a three-room open plan -- two bedrooms and a kitchen, with a pleasant deck outside. (Warning to parents -- the rooms did not have doors, which meant limited privacy.) There was no television, which was a relief to me, but the books and board games gave us plenty to do in the evenings. Decorations were fun -- sort of contemporary Hawaiian -- and not fussy grandmothery like a lot of B&Bs. The breakfast of fresh baked goods and fruit was a huge treat, and generally more than we could eat. The only quibbles are that the house is not terribly close to anything, and the view was nice, but not great -- we could see parts of Kealakekua Bay through the trees. The birds were a nice local treat, but they were quite loud in the morning, which made sleep past 6 a.m. kind of hard. Then again, with nightfall at 6:30, and not a whole lot of nightlife in the area, early rising wasn't a huge hardship. The house is close to snorkeling destinations, and the owners were very good at helping us find an outfitter.

We really enjoyed our stay at the South Kona Hideaway. We were very impressed with how spacious and clean everything was. The only downside I could see is that it didn't have television or air conditioning. Even with the windows open it could be a little stuffy. Perhaps if they add a ceiling fan that would help. One thing we looked forward to each morning was the wonderful breakfast basket. There were so many exotic fruits and things we have never seen before. It was always our morning treat after a full day of activites the day before. If you're looking for glitz and glamour, this is not the place. But if you want a private place to stay that is not intrusive, then this place is for you

We choose the Hideaway for chilling after two weeks touring Hawaii. We were amazed by the rainforest and the quietness surrounding the place. Wo loved sitting on the lanai, watching the sunset with a first round of grilled tuna from the barbecue and a wine, before taking a rest in the outdoor jacuzzi and watching the stars. Because it is up 300m from the sea level, it was warm but not hot in the night.
Super friendly landlords, make sure you asked them for the nice beaches. You can choose from black sand to hideaway beaches.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed at The South Kona Hideaway one night in November. We did not really know much about the place as going to the Kona side of the island was a decision made in the last minute. But when we arrived at the B&B after having driven all the way from Puna it was like arriving in a little slice of heaven.

We had booked the Lanai room, which had it's own private deck where we could sit, enjoy the wonderful view and relax. Apart from the fact that the room (which was actually more like an apartment - it turned out it could sleep four people) was absolutely wonderful and stylishly decorated it was also all the little details that made us feel very welcome: Our names were written on the private entrance door to the room, there were free Kona coffee available that we could just make if we felt like a cup of coffee, there was a big folder with suggestions for places to eat, things to do and experience in the area and last but not least the toilet had a palm-leaf decoration like if it had been a five-star hotel. Lou and Eric (the owners) were also very welcoming in themselves, helping us with tips on where to eat and things to do. They were the perfect hosts; nice and helpful and we could just knock on their door if we had any questions but at the same time giving us all the privacy we could ever want.

Having driven all day we were not the most adventurous of tourists, so we ended up going to Capt. Cook to have good dinner and then going back to the B&B where we would just spend the evening on the deck, with the nice view.

Before we went to dinner I had seen a brochure in the folder for a local massage therapist whom Lou told us did house calls. Since my back hurt from all the driving i decided that it would be the most luxurious of luxuries to get a massage without having to go somewhere to get it and Lou went out of his way to get a hold of the massage therapist. He did and she arrived and I got an hour of the most blissful massage I have ever gotten in my entire life. So thank you to Kathryn Andren from Gemini Awakening for that :)

The breakfast next morning was delivered right to our door by Lou and it was to die for (lots of fruit and homemade scones). Eating it outside on the deck while enjoying the view was the essence of relaxation and we cannot wait to come back and stay at the South Kona Hideaway while we explore the area more.

Thank you for a wonderful stay :)

My wife and I spent 4 days at South Kona Hideaway in January, and had a wonderful stay. The B&B is tucked in the hillside amongst coffee plantations and lush tropical foliage, but has beautiful ocean views. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck at the end of the day watching the sunset on the Pacific horizon as well as hot tubs at night. We cooked dinner in a couple nights and thoroughly enjoyed our homemade baked goods with local tropical fruits and fresh Kona coffee from the neighboring farms. Lou, Erik and their foxhound, Buford, were perfect hosts -- friendly, hospitable and responsive to our needs, but they gave us our privacy and space to enjoy our time together. The rooms are great, and the beds the most comfortable we have ever stayed in at a B&B. Highly recommended!
