We all love Hawaii, but staying away from the masses is often an issue on these islands. But, we found the ideal place to spend 6 serene days at the Sugar Shack # 3 in Captain Cook, South Kona owned by Kelly & Kim.
The one bed-room unit is located in a coffee-farm surrounded by greenery. We were serenaded all day long by birds. Then in the evening, the vast starry sky with a sliver of the moon, the chirping crickets in the bush and the crackling sounds of the campfire made it very romantic. We also loved dining on the balcony by candle light.
Fresh fruits were abound; the papaya trees were covered with fruits, large avocados were waiting to be picked, lemons were coloring the tree yellow. We could hardly finish the fruits we picked and were offered.
We loved the little house, which was immaculate, tastefully decorated and equipped with all we wanted to enjoy a comfortable stay. Since we love to cook, we especially loved the well equipped kitchen. It also was convenient to have a washer & dryer and very reliable free Wi-Fi. Though not necessary, there was even a large flat screen TV in the living room. Equipment for water sports were also readily available on the porch.
Nothing was very far from the house; grocery store, cafes & restaurants, beach, a hiking trail in the state park. The city of Kona was less than 30 miles away and we could easily go out to lunch in the city during the day and come back for a quiet evening.
The shack is rather close to the road, but we only noticed that every once in a while when a car or a motorcycle was very loud. There also were some movements of vehicles and some sort of woodworking at the front of the property closer to the road. This too did not bother us, especially during these holidays, but it is hard to say what it would be like on a regular working day.
All in all, we had an excellent stay at the Sugar Shack # 3, and we highly recommend the place to travelers who seek peace and quiet.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Sugar Shack 2 for almost 3 weeks. We have been to the Big Island many times before and this was by far our favorite place to stay. Even though it is quite a drive from the airport (about 30-40 minutes), we love staying in South Kona. The Sugar Shack is really close to our favorite snorkeling spots on the island and close to some restaurants, the grocery store, and the Green Market. The house is on a farm, which we loved. We would walk around the property, look at the crops, talk to the farmers, and play with the animals (2 cats and a dog).
Even though we never got to meet Kelly (her family was on vacation), she was amazing! I rented a Honda Element from her, so we had to call each other while I was still in Vegas and she is just so easy-going and nice. We ended up talking for an hour like we were old friends! =) We plan on staying here again when we visit. I could not recommend it enough!
