We had a great stay at this Captain Cook B&B. Our room was spacious and convenient with a large deck looking out over the coast and ocean to the West. The sunsets were truly beautiful. The drive in to the B&B requires a careful read of instructions the first time, but the quiet and secluded site is worth it. Breakfasts and hospitality were great. Kurt and Kana are charming hosts and Jenna makes a great concierge. Learned a great deal about growing coffee on the Big Island from Kurt - and brought some of his coffee home with us. We would recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a beautiful place to stay and a convenient location in the Captain Cook/South Kona area.

We spent 11 wonderful days at the Edge in November 2012. We have had many nice vacations, but this was by far the best ! I would recommend staying at the Edge to anyone who wants to avoid crowds of tourists and learn tons of things about the magical Big Island. Kurt is very nice and knowledgeable, and he talks about Hawaii with love and passion. His wife Kana always has a smile on her face and makes the best (healthiest) breakfasts ever. We were served fresh fruit from the farm’s own production every morning (guava, avocado, lilikoi, cherimoya, bananas …). Little Jenna was the best companion for our two kids (4 and 7), taught them where to look for the best macadamia nuts and how to crack them…. Unfortunately, we missed her Hula dance lesson, which we hoped to participate in (one more reason to go back !). We learned a lot about how to grow coffee and got to taste the best coffee in the world every single morning. All organic ! We stayed in the Nut Room to start with and upgraded to the Pacific Room later on. Both rooms were nice, but the size of the Pacific Room fit our family of 4 much better. We also loved our semi-private part of the lanai. The farmhouse is big, quiet and very friendly, we really did feel like being home away from home. Normally, I would worry about my children, not knowing what they were doing and where exactly they were, but I didn’t feel the same way at the Edge. We felt completely safe, let the children play and just relaxed.
Kurt also offered us beach towels, a beach umbrella and a variety of other things we could use on the beach. This, of course, saved a lot of space in our suitcases.
The farm is located in a quiet place on the side of a hill, with a stunning view over the landscape and the ocean. Still we didn’t feel like we were isolated in the middle of nowhere. Captain Cook is in a close proximity to Kona, very close to the Place of Refuge Historical Park, a number of good cafes and restaurants (Super J’s and their Lau Lau is definitely something worth trying, Coffee and Epicurea had a great coffee, good cakes, freshly baked bread and a nice garden to sit in). It took us about an hour to drive to Hapuna Beach (white sand), but there were other beaches closer than that. Captain Cook is a good starting point for exploring the island, we didn’t have trouble getting to any destination by car, it was all easy and the roads were of a very good quality.
All in all, choosing the Edge as our base on the Big Island was a great decision, and we truly hope we can go back to visit soon !

Kurt, Kana, and Jenna are amazing hosts! They're very welcoming and delightful people. Kurt has an extensive knowledge of the Big Island that he's very open to sharing. You could not ask for better hosts. The breakfast each morning was delightful and delicious. We were in the Crow's Nest. The room was very spacious, well kept, and had a beautiful view. It is some distance from Kona (30 minutes), but that puts you in a much more tranquil place that's more in touch with real Hawaiian life. Very close to the Place of Refuge, Kealakekua Bay, and Painted Church. Do follow Kurt's directions (do not use GPS!), drive slowly, and you'll get there fine.

Room Tip: The Crow's Nest, while the highest price room was worth it. Great view!

Located in the working rural farm in Big Island. Exceptional experience. Fantastic view and great breakfast. This is not hotel, this is much more. 45 min drive from an airport, you need to use detailed Kurt's instrucion to get there. You can use good working internet but there are problems with signal for mobile phones.
.
I just want to retire in paradise like this :)

Arriving at night, driving to The Edge down a narrow, windy, hilly road, following Kurt's explicit instructions left me thinking, what have I gotten us into and my husband thinking what has SHE gotten us into? No worry, it's just an adventure that ends up great!
If you want comfort and informality, along with fabulous views from the rooms and the balconies (or lanai's), wonderful hosts who are welcoming, with a genuine interest in providing any and all the information/suggestions we wanted, this is the place to be. Kana made delicious breakfasts which included fruits(many of which were new to us) and flowers some of which were picked just before being served on the balcony with beautiful views. Kurt had lots of great ideas, wonderful coffee grown right on the land, and was himself a really down to earth, kind and interesting person. Their delightful 6 year old daughter Jenna loved interacting with us and we loved her energy and enthusiasm. Kurt and Kana often felt she might have been being intrusive long before we did. We were there for 6 nights and loved it. Wish there were more places like this! Thank you Kurt and Kana and Jenna Jean, Raleigh, NC

My sister and I really enjoyed our stay at the Edge and wished we'd been able to stay longer. Kurt and Kana are wonderful hosts and their home is comfortable and unpretentious. We liked the Nut Room--a great value for the price. The grounds are lovely and the views of the ocean are great.

Kurt and family were extremely friendly and accommodating. We loved the room, the view and the whole house. We brought our two young kids and they felt comfortable roaming the grounds and enjoyed playing with Kurt's daughter Jenna. The breakfast was excellent, featuring fresh fruit and a variety of main dishes. Kurt was an excellent tour guide, offering great insights into local activities as well as a botanical tour of his property. We stayed in the "crow's nest" and had a wonderful view of the Kona coastline. We would recommend the Edge to everyone and hope to return someday!
