“wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

We stayed at the "Edge of the world" for one week and had an absolutely wonderful time. The owners provided a very warm and personal atmosphere. The breakfast was served with a variety of fresh fruit from their own garden and with delicious home-grown coffee. From the lanai you have a nice view of the ocean. Our kids cracked macademia nuts that they found on the ground and Kurt (the owner) gave us an interesting tour of his yard and great tips for excursions around the island.

Room Tip: We stayed at the "nut room", which is quite small for four, but it was the only one availa...

My little boy and I stayed in their Nut Room, which is their least expensive room, and which has two beds and a private bathroom (which is down the hall, but private). The owners were out of the country during our visit, but Amber and Satomi, who were handling things in their absence, took great care of us, and made us feel totally at home. The B&B is comfortable, clean, and they serve filling breakfasts with delicious coffee and lots of fruit. Amber was particularly helpful in recommending restaurants with a little kid in mind. My son turned 9 during our stay, and they made a huge fuss of him at breakfast and made him feel special. My son will really miss their outdoor cat, Chibi, who became his garden friend. The view from the lanai is spectacular, and while we were there, we were lucky in that there was not all that much vog, although I hear that varies. The drive into the place requires some concentration initially, and you need to go slowly, but is not difficult to master after the first try. Lots of chickens in the neighborhood, but we like chickens. Nice area, nice place, nice price. We stayed for four days.

Room Tip: The Nut Room has TWO beds, and is the most economical - great for not only a single parent and child...

Location is a little out of the way but it is quiet and the view is unmatched. We stayed in the crows nest and it was incredible, sitting on our private balcony drinking wine, watching the sunset, just incredible. The hosts are incredibly nice and accommodating. I would highly recommend this BnB.

we stayed here for 5 nights in the Pacific room. this is a small bnb with only 3 rooms, on the mountainside in Captain Cook. The family is great-welcoming, accommodating and very helpful with anything you need. Kurt is very helpful with restaurants, things to do, etc. The room we stayed in is very large, the bathroom is huge-you could have a party in it! There is a hair dryer and liquid shower gel. The semi private lanai has a beautiful view of the bay. there is a small fridge on the lanai. There is a freezer available with ice packs, coolers, beach chairs, snorkel gear, even a kayak available. Free laundry service, beach towels, satellite tv, internet service. This is a coffee/mac nut farm great breakfast with fresh farm grown fruit and kona coffee, which you can purchase to take home, or you can have it mailed for when you return. prices here for the coffee are the best I have found for real, quality, kona coffee. The bed is king size and very comfortable. The drive down is a bit of a challenge,, but the directions provided are detailed and very good. You quickly become accustomed to the narrow road, and it is nice to be away from the city. Loved this place. Easy to recommend.

Room Tip: choose one of the rooms with an ocean view.

We had a great stay at this Captain Cook B&B. Our room was spacious and convenient with a large deck looking out over the coast and ocean to the West. The sunsets were truly beautiful. The drive in to the B&B requires a careful read of instructions the first time, but the quiet and secluded site is worth it. Breakfasts and hospitality were great. Kurt and Kana are charming hosts and Jenna makes a great concierge. Learned a great deal about growing coffee on the Big Island from Kurt - and brought some of his coffee home with us. We would recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a beautiful place to stay and a convenient location in the Captain Cook/South Kona area.

We spent 11 wonderful days at the Edge in November 2012. We have had many nice vacations, but this was by far the best ! I would recommend staying at the Edge to anyone who wants to avoid crowds of tourists and learn tons of things about the magical Big Island. Kurt is very nice and knowledgeable, and he talks about Hawaii with love and passion. His wife Kana always has a smile on her face and makes the best (healthiest) breakfasts ever. We were served fresh fruit from the farm’s own production every morning (guava, avocado, lilikoi, cherimoya, bananas …). Little Jenna was the best companion for our two kids (4 and 7), taught them where to look for the best macadamia nuts and how to crack them…. Unfortunately, we missed her Hula dance lesson, which we hoped to participate in (one more reason to go back !). We learned a lot about how to grow coffee and got to taste the best coffee in the world every single morning. All organic ! We stayed in the Nut Room to start with and upgraded to the Pacific Room later on. Both rooms were nice, but the size of the Pacific Room fit our family of 4 much better. We also loved our semi-private part of the lanai. The farmhouse is big, quiet and very friendly, we really did feel like being home away from home. Normally, I would worry about my children, not knowing what they were doing and where exactly they were, but I didn’t feel the same way at the Edge. We felt completely safe, let the children play and just relaxed.
Kurt also offered us beach towels, a beach umbrella and a variety of other things we could use on the beach. This, of course, saved a lot of space in our suitcases.
The farm is located in a quiet place on the side of a hill, with a stunning view over the landscape and the ocean. Still we didn’t feel like we were isolated in the middle of nowhere. Captain Cook is in a close proximity to Kona, very close to the Place of Refuge Historical Park, a number of good cafes and restaurants (Super J’s and their Lau Lau is definitely something worth trying, Coffee and Epicurea had a great coffee, good cakes, freshly baked bread and a nice garden to sit in). It took us about an hour to drive to Hapuna Beach (white sand), but there were other beaches closer than that. Captain Cook is a good starting point for exploring the island, we didn’t have trouble getting to any destination by car, it was all easy and the roads were of a very good quality.
All in all, choosing the Edge as our base on the Big Island was a great decision, and we truly hope we can go back to visit soon !
